As the end of the year approaches, Donald Trump is solidly ensconced at the top of the Republican polls nationally. The man just behind him? Senator Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) , an establishment bugaboo. The establishmentâs favorite candidate, Senator Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) , is currently running far behind in national polling, a distant third in Iowa, and in a deadlock with Cruz and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie for second in New Hampshire.
Panic time.
So, hereâs the establishment roundup for Christmas week.
If You Support Donald Trump, You Want to Lose. Earlier this week, Bret Stephens of The Wall Street Journal unleashed a petulant column accusing all Trump and Cruz backers of begging for defeat. âLet us now pledge to elect Hillary Clinton as the 45th president of the United States,â he snarked. âLetâs do this because itâs what we want. Maybe secretly, maybe unconsciously, but desperately. We want fourâand probably eightâmore years of cable-news neuralgia. We want to drive ourselves to work as Mark Levin or Laura Ingraham scratch our ideological itches until they bleed a little. We want the refinerâs fire that is our righteous indignation at a country we claim no longer to recognizeâruled by impostors and overrun by foreigners.â Stephens specifically singled out Cruz for criticism, calling him a flip-flopper âhappy to be on any side of an issue so long as he can paint himself as a âreal Republican.ââ(continued)

Will is ill, and has been for a long time.
I told you I wasn't going to clean up your mess, foam boy. Bye now.
The real problem is that with Trump in office the opportunity for Graft goes way down.
Apparently, Will worries more about the presentation than the content of anyone’s comments.
How has Will fared under Obama???? How many sides of the fence can Will straddle.???
I hadn't heard of SMOD before ..... "Sweet Meteor O'Death" .... the point of the guy bringing it up in his article (quoted by Breitbart) being that some people over in the e-GOP think Trump is just that SMOD.
What we've got is a lot of Yeb!-backing honchos sitting around bemoaning the probability that, if Trump wins the nom and possibly the White House, they'll have a lot less "honch" to share among themselves.
Not exactly a national disaster, except for them and their egos, their sense of their own "honchliness".
I can see it now, FR threads full of fingerpointing and "SMOD! SMOD!" posts as the RiNOs slowly sink into the mud.
It seems to me that what we had in the last two election cycles (2008 and 2012) was the equivalent of “Ten Little Indians” where elements on the left and the right did their character assassinations and, one by one, the candidates toppled until all we had left was the “pre-approved” guy.
This time is different. This time we have The Donald who has taken a withering amount of crap but not only is still standing, but appears even more resolute and formidable than he was at the beginning of the race. I’m reminded of George Allen and his “Macaca moment” where he folded like a cheap suit. In this case they attack Trump at his various utterances and instead of yielding he doubles-down. I admire that.
I’m not exactly sure what you meant with your last sentence but I do suppose that there always will be a few who piss & moan, no matter what happens.
Occasionally he rises above that Mencken-and-Bierce disdainful standoffishness and does something affirmative, as when he did debate prep for George H.W. Bush. Critics hosed Will for taking a positively partisan action to help Bush.
These are the same people who, in 2012, didn't mind Katie Couric's closeting herself for over 36 hours (I seem to remember 39 hours) of "debate prep" with two foreign-policy heavyweights, Richard Haas of the CFR and former Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.), longtime chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, for her hostile interview with Sarah Palin.
It was supposed to be a "news interview". It wasn't anything of the sort.
I can’t wait for Trump to start exposing and deconstructing Mr Fishnet Stockings.
I criticized George Will. You defended him. Keep up.
I criticized Will, you misquoted me and defended Will and then attacked me personally. I never criticized you. Only asked that you keep up. Please. Keep up.
Will didn't say that. This is an outright lie. It's also pathological nonsense. Only a member of the Cult of Trump an ignoramus would believe this.
