Lucky hikers meet President Obama on Koko Head trail

Some people on the Koko Head Crater Trail got an unexpected thrill Tuesday morning as they met President Obama while on a hike. Earlier in the morning, President Obama returned to the Marine Corps Base Hawaii gym for a second consecutive day for a hour’s workout.

Reminds me of the time I took my boys backpacking on the Chinnabee Silent Trail and we ran into a group called the “Outsiders”. One had on a shirt that further identified them as the Gay Outsiders. They were really sad. We might as well have been in San Francisco as in the Alabama backwoods.

Diamond Head is nothing compared to Koko Head. The “trail” is an old railway bed and you use the ties as steps all the way up. Much steeper climb than Diamond Head. I only got half way up before nausea stopped me. If I was in HI longer and tried every day, I could make it to the top after a few tries. Koko Head is great exercise by itself if you do it every day.
