NEW YORK - A "credible threat" has been lodged against New York City, days ahead of Christmas and during an especially busy time of the year when tourists flock to the Big Apple, law enforcement sources told PIX11 News Tuesday.
Top NYPD brass including Commissioner William Bratton held an emergency meeting Tuesday to discuss the threat and their response to it, sources said. Few details were released about the nature of the threat.
A federal law enforcement source said the threat is not specific and could take place in several major U.S. cities.
All New York City police officers received a bulletin Tuesday afternoon outlining the department's tactical plan and warning officers to stay vigilant, according to sources. That internal memo mentioned social media being used as a tactic and that a possible attack could come without warning.
Expect to see increased police presence at iconic locations across multiple boroughs, including Times Square, St. Patrick's Cathedral for Midnight Mass on Thursday, and Barclays Center in Brooklyn, marking the first time a threat has sparked a swell of police presence in a borough other than Manhattan.
Sources said several factors lead them to believe this threat is credible, including the reliability of the source, the nature of the threat and the timing, specifically that the holidays are approaching.
News of a threat against the city comes exactly one week after a menacing email was sent to public school districts in New York and Los Angeles. That "specific" message, which Bratton said contained outlandish threats that mirrored recent episodes of the show "Homeland," sparked the total closure of Los Angeles schools. Officials in New York determined the emailed threat was a hoax.
Still, New York City has been on high alert since the Nov. 13 terror attacks in Paris that killed 130 victims and injured hundreds more in a calculated assault executed by three teams of three assailants each, armed with explosive vests, belts and assault rifles. ISIS took responsibility for the carnage.
After the Paris attack, a video released by the terror group surfaced showing several scenes in New York City, including Times Square, a GAP in Herald Square, T.G.I. Friday's and yellow taxi cabs on city streets.
At the time, Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio said there was no new or credible threat against the city but urged residents and visitors alike to be vigilant and report suspicious activity.
Then, on Dec. 2, a married couple unleashed a terror attack at a facility for individuals with developmental disabilities in San Bernardino, Calif., stoking the fear of terror attacks happening on U.S. soil.
Armed with multiple assault rifles, Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik burst into a conference room at Inland Regional Center and opened fire. In all, 14 people were killed, ranging in age from 26 to 60, and 21 victims were hurt. The suspects were shot dead when they tried to take on dozens of police officers as they fled in a black SUV.
FBI investigators said Farook and Malik had been "radicalized for some time" but said they likely were not directed by ISIS to carry out the attack.
Any suspicious behavior should be reported to the nearest police officer, by calling 911 or 1-888-NYC-SAFE.
Tips can also be submitted via the app "See Say," which lets users send a photo or message of any suspicious activity they see to the New York State Intelligence Center. Officials will then review the tip and if itâs a major threat, will call in additional law enforcement.
The app doesn't replace the 911 system, but rather is another way citizens can help prevent a potentially deadly attack.
I was commenting on your comment:
âTerrorists dont seem to use their tactics to show love or hate for any political personalityâ
The point was Terrorist do us political persons and show hate for them. As a matter of fact they make it a daily activity called against many of the same things the progressive left are trying to promote to Break down society.
So in short I was pointing out what you said was not correct.
God Bless
In the days of Guiliani, those bums were constantly picked up and taken to a homeless shelter. That discouraged most of the panhandlers (a homeless shelter is the last place they typically want to go).
It's a shame because Grand Central is such a majestic place. Even if my train comes in on an outer track, I go out of my way to walk through the lobby before I start my workday. I feel like the master of the universe walking through that place. Sometimes you have a classical quartet playing in the Lexington Street passage and I always make it a point to drop a few coins in their plate, while ignoring the panhandlers who only want the coins for their next 40-ounce can of booze.
See something, say Muslim.
And point to them. Or say “schlahm “ and get all the liberal’s medias attention
The Burka Battalion
Yep....very wrong train station, indeed !
I have always loved Grand Central; it's beautiful ( especially since its renovation/cleanup ), but it sickens me that Penn Station ( this was way before your time ) wasn't saved. That too was majestic and should have been made an historic building !
Those damned bums are really just crooks and should be swept away, as Rudy did !
From the time I was a bitty child, until I was a young adult, there was a supposed beggar at the front of Bloomies. When he died, the paper wrote him up and it came to light that he wasn't REALLY bum, owned several condos or co-ops, had a large bank account, and this was all an act!
The MSM...including/especially FNC keep doing huge anti-Trump articles. They all HATE him, so you aren’t going to get the truth from any of them!
It’s the “good cop” “bad cop” routine.....the mayor gets to play the liberal card, while Bratton plays “whatever it takes to keep the heat off” the mayor card.
Well, it’s his beat. They do move him around, but this is where his precinct is.
I'm too young to have seen Penn Station in its glory but I'm well aware of the atrocity committed there and seen the old photos - should have been made a landmark.
Like I said earlier, Grand Central is a real treasure. When I work out of my Lexington Ave office, I always take a midday walk around the city. But when it's raining, I go to Grand Central and walk around there. I've discovered pretty much all the passages that lead to 48th St, Madison Ave, the subways, etc., so that I can take a 3-4 mile walk without having to step outdoors and without having to recross my steps very much.
The great thing about NYC, is that there are quite a few underground passages, that one can use when it rains/snows, and not get wet.
As bad as NYC was about preservation, Chicago was much worse! So many wonderful architecture/buildings have been lost in both cities; sadly. :-(
Still and all, at least NYC has managed to keep quite a lot of its treasured old buildings.
Unless it’s Muslim related.
I don’t like bug cities or crowds. I’d rather be in a forest any day.
I was going to ask, but I don’t want to know. Like the NASCAR drivers.
Just don't say "muslim" in your tip recording, or Loretta will toss you in jail.
Juxtapose that with the picture of Comrade Wilhelm at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Can’t find a picture? Wonder why. Doesn’t fit his liberal agenda. Disgraceful.
No, I meant what did you mean exactly when you said your brother thinks he’s immune to/from the evil?
I rather prefer, “see something;shoot something.”
Followed by SSU. Then again, that’s why I don’t live in NY...
Lol, Good one and a bulls eye if I do say!
