A new poll indicates that 68% of my supporters would vote for me if I departed the GOP & ran as an independent. https://t.co/ztP5d2ctZl â Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 8, 2015

Trump as an Indie will pull in a lot of the young voters who are always looking for a way to do things differently, or in a more ‘hip’ way, a little edgy. He’s got that going for him.
I don’t believe there is any chance Trump will run as an independent. He is WINNING on the GOP ballot! He also knows that he would have a ballot access problem as an independent.
The most important number is this: EIGHT (8)
According to the GOPs own bylaws, no candidate that doesn’t have at least 8 outright state wins, can be the nominee. Who are these other candidates that are leading in all these other states, and which states are they? Trump has 48% in MA; you think he might win the GOP primary in NY? This means, that even if all the 5%ers donate all their delegates to another candidate, unless that person has won 8 states, IT WILL NOT MATTER. And no convention floor fight is going to change that factoid.
If the GOPeers won’t allow Trump, they aren’t going to allow Cruz either.
Trump would easily beat Hillary and Jeb, or Marco.
Agreed, candidates like Rubio and mainstream Republicans are just as bad as the Democrats, I would also follow Trump out of the Republican Party.
“and probably destroy the GOP as a viable party”
In Washington the GOP is NOT a viable party, it has already destroyed itself.
It makes no difference to a GOPe nominee whether I vote third party or stay home. I’ve held my nose and voted for the lesser of two evils (scumbag McConnell) for the last time. Under no circumstance will I cast a 2016 presidential vote for a candidate not named Cruz or Trump.
The Uniparty / GOPe / Donors / RINOs have already ANNOUNCED PUBLICLY that they would support Hillary over Donald.

Key words: TRUMP IS WINNING AS A REPUBLICAN, that is not going to change in my opinion. Trump is a Loyal person, he will not betray what he has started.
I think this rumor keeps going because of wishful thinking by those that hope he will lose. As Trump would say "Not gonna happen"

HOW MUCH TROUBLE ARE WE IN? CAN YOU SAY âEXISTENTIALâ??
Me, too.
I am not a conspiracy theorist at all. But if he runs as an independent, no one will ever convince me otherwise that this wasn’t the plan all along to put Hillary in the White House.
The two of them would be political Machiavellian geniuses.
Who can beat Hillery? That is what I am looking for. We need a winner.
I think Trump is making the threat just to scare the crap out of the losers of the GOPe. He loves to yank their chain.
With his great poll numbers, I would let the primary season take it’s course.
Donald Trump would not stain his good name by helping the beast win.
They destroyed themselves long ago.
Trump should demand payment from Rinse Pleabus and Wasserface Shoals for 100,000 million or go independant!
What if it was Cruz and not Jeb?
“no one will ever convince me otherwise that this wasn’t the plan all along to put Hillary in the White House.”
Nevermind all the open plots against him....nah!
Try aiming your vitriol at the GOPe. Trump is under no damn obligation to take this BS, just so some party hacks wont feel bad.
Consider that no one has been talking about Trump running as an independent for the last 6-8 weeks. Then consider that Trump brings it up seemingly out of nowhere.
Why would he do this? Why bring it up now when it’s an all-but-dead issue
Unless....
Unless Trump wanted to send someone a message.
My guess: The GOPe are plotting and scheming on rule changes to keep Trump off the ballots, ensure as few people can vote as possible (and that only their people can vote etc..). In short, skewing the game to get the result they want. Trump saw it and this is his way of calling them out on it.
“Trump will win as an indie. He’ll pull as many dems as repubs.”<——Truth.
Look for the GOP convention to turn into a free-for-all as the GOPe changes the rules on the fly to give the “super delegates” maximum power to maneuver the nomination away from Trump - even though Trump will likely have an overwhelming majority of delegates from the primary states.
