Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has hit a new high in the North Carolina race in part because of his tough rhetoric on Islam, a new poll found.Trump gets 33 percent support among the state's Republicans, doubling the nearest contender, according to a survey from the liberal-leaning Public Policy Polling (PPP) released Tuesday.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is in second place at 16 percent, followed by retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) at 14 percent each.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush follows at 5 percent, with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Ohio Gov. John Kasich each at 4 percent.
The survey was conducted before Trump ignited a firestorm of controversy this week by proposing that Muslims be barred from entering the country.
However, the poll tested GOP attitudes on Trump's previous rhetoric on Islam, and found his ideas are supported by a plurality of Republicans in the state.
Trump has flirted with the idea of a national registry for Muslims, has said the U.S. must spy on mosques and close down those believed to be disseminating extreme views, and has alleged that "thousands" of Muslim-Americans cheered the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks from rooftop parties in New Jersey.
The survey found that 48 percent of Republicans in North Carolina support a national database for Muslims, while only 33 percent who oppose the idea.
Thirty-five percent of Republicans in North Carolina "want to shut down the mosques in the U.S." according to the poll, with 33 percent saying they oppose the idea.
And 42 percent said they believe thousands of Arabs in New Jersey cheered the 9/11 terror attacks, against 26 percent who said they did not believe that happened.
All of those numbers are far greater among Trump's supporters.
Sixty-seven percent of Trump backers said they support a national database for Muslims; 51 percent said they want to see the nation's mosques shut down; and 62 percent said they believe thousands of Muslims cheered the 9/11 attacks at parties in New Jersey.
The PPP survey of 537 Republican primary voters in North Carolina was conducted between Dec. 5 and Dec. 7 and has a 4.2 percentage point margin of error.
Trump has increased his level of support in North Carolina in every PPP survey of North Carolina since July. Voters in the state will cast ballots March 15.
have at it!
Excellent, excellent post. Too bad the American people can’t understand it.
It just says "his rhetoric on Islam."
"However, the poll tested GOP attitudes on Trump's previous rhetoric on Islam, and found his ideas are supported by a plurality of Republicans in the state."
I had to go deeper myself.
Can’t wait to see the post “defending America” polls.
Trump is exactly right, and most everyone knows it BUT The problem according to napolitano is that he said -muslims- - constitutionally he can-t say that because there is a -religious clause- in the constitution- He CAN however constitutionally say -WE need to ban ALL people from the middle east until we figure out what the hell is going on-Â
There is no constitutional ban for calling for people from any nation to be banned- Especially when people from ANY nation might pose a direct threat to US citizens- Infact a president has am oral obligation to do just that- there-s only a ban on trying to ban people for their -religious belief-
Of course when trump or anyone says -musli- everyone KNOWS that they are referring to people from the middle east, and NOT to their religious belief (Even though islam is implicated In the violence and everyone KNOWS that!)
The MSM is so out of touch with Americans.
This message approved by Charles Martel.
Since Cruz is a Constitutionist and believes in state sovereignty, he will most likely propose that it should be the states that decide the Muslim immigration issue.
The GOP is too busy getting along with the Dems to be bothered with fighting back. They surrendered in unison.
Pray America wakes
Put me in the 35% who want to shut the Islamic Command Centers/ammo dumps, er, mosques down.
Most of the others will come along but it might take a few more big massacres, maybe of the Beslan variety where entire buildings full of school children are wiped out before they see the madness of their Politically Correct folly. Don't think the Muslims won't do it because they already have.
Islam is a "religion" which promotes tyranny and mass murder. Why any decent American would want to bring or accept more of that pouring into this country is beyond me.
Dream on.
That would not work. A state does not want them but a neighboring state does. The states can not keep them within that state and they are free to roam.
I don’t think conservatives want to hear that Cruz is not for a moratorium on muslim immigration.
I believe in state sovereignty also but immigration is legally a job for the Federal govt with input from the states. The states already have the right to inspect any refugees and they can reject anybody they believe is a threat to the state or will not fit in properly.
What is beyond us is peachy with a majority of the American people, some of whom aren’t that “American”.
“Those people who champion the rights of illegals over citizens, want subjects not citizens to predominate.”
Let me help with that:
Those people who champion the rights of illegals over citizens, should be hanged from lampposts as traitors. Thanks for your time and consideration.
