Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a series of economic sanctions against Turkey following the downing of Russian figher jet by Turkish forces earlier this week.
A decree published on the Kremlin's website on Saturday came hours after Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan voiced "sadness" over the incident, saying he wished it had not happened.

...Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan voiced 'sadness' over the incident, saying he wished it had not happened.

Sounds very Clintonian when parsed. As in => 'I am sad that the Russian pilot violated our airspace and we had to shoot it down. I wish it had not happened.'
ISIS are smuggling Syrian oil across Turkey’s border. The revenue from the oil is used to finance their war effort. ISIS is also using Turkey’s border to move foreign fighters in and out of the war zone. If Erdogan wants Russia to end their bombing along their border, he should seal 60 miles of border.
We got into this before.
Russia doesn’t have to attack. They have the high ground and all Putin has to do is turn the screw, which he is masterfully turning now.
There is no way in HELL that France, Germany or any other NATO ally, particularly bath house Barry is going into a hot war with Russia over Turkey. No Way In HELL!
France is trying to get into bed with Russia in order to takeout ISIS and the Syrian Rebels because they know Obama is too much of a pussy to do it.
Turkey has lots more to lose in this than Russia including a hasty forced exit from NATO.They can also kiss goodbye any chance of ever getting into the EU, A desire they have had for decades.
Turkey will make a formal and public apology and they will eat crow and pay compensation to Russia and the downed pilots family.
Putin, though a scum and thug, is a real man. Obama is Putin’s bitch and they both know it.
That is just the way it is.
It is all grand standing and Turkey has all but conceded.
Apology, public, written by Friday from Turkey.
Compensation to pilots family and Russia for their jet.
Obama already told Erdogan that he wasn’t going to help him.France told them the same.
It simply doesn’t make any sense.
Billions easily flow into Turkey from Russian tourists. From May to October....a couple dozen planes each day make the flight down and dump off Russians. They spend money on hotels, rental cars, stupid tours, booze, and gifts. The money flowed into small towns along the southern coast and everyone was benefiting from the growth in tourism over the past decade.
Now? You can’t make up any new clients to fill the empty hole left by the Russians. Greece? They probably are getting calls already and will see a surge of 100-percent in terms of Russian tourists for 2016.
All you say is well and good.
But numbers or percentages can be deceiving. Turkey is overall only one single big trading partner of Russia, and the reverse is true as well. In fact, overall, the difference between imports and exports as far as both Turkey and Russia’s top 10 trading partners are concerned is only just about 1.5% strictly between Russia and Turkey, themselves.
Moreover, it is Sector-specific.
Sanctions, in tourism won’t impact Russia as much as it will impact Turkey. In agriculture and food as well, Russia can replace its Turkish imports quite easily. Even in Turkish construction sector which fairly well dominates in Russia, Russian companies can easily take over Turks.
The mutually lucrative trade between Turkey and Russia is in Energy sector, natural gas, crude, refined products, coal, plus the nuclear plant Russia is building in Turkey. It can hurt them both.
In other sectors like media, financial services, Turkish economy is fairly well Russian owned.
All in all, it depends how sanctions are imposed. But this tit for tat I agree won’t go too far. There are mutual dependencies, hence the fact that they had mutual agreement to allow travel without pre-entry visa requirements or restrictions.
One of the biggest aces up Turkey’s sleeve and they know it too, is they want to have their cake and eat it too. They got NATO protection by being in NATO; yet they have lucrative trade deals with Russia at the same time. Milking both sides as they can. Not to mention that Erdogan is an Islamist, playing all sides and against each other when it suits him.
My BIL is Turkish. He flies in during every election to vote against Erdogan. He calls him a criminal thug!
yep, but that’s just one sector in favor of Russia.
See #26
Russia shot down a Turkish fighter what, last summer? This is payback. That doesn’t mean Erdogan isn’t going to be VERY sorry he made the move. As far as Obama? He probably just provided the information. I doubt he promised backup against Ivan.
But I think that an accident to a Turkish warplane may happen once it is in the Syrian airspace. Because of communication failure or something.
I am no fan of Erdogan, but Russia is 100 times the threat to the U.S. that Turkey is.
It's interesting. Russia is about to help Turkey in a big way, even if it's not their intention. Russia is about to screw over Christian Armenian by siding with their Muslim Azerbaijani enemies. And anything that hurts Armenia makes Turkey happy.
A lot of deluded people think Putin is some kind of defender of Christians. The reality is there is a longer list of times he's helped Muslims against Christians.
Erdogan is learning the old Chinese aphorism: “Anyone can grab a tiger by the ears. The difficulty is in letting go.”

Before this is all over, Turkey will be sad it ever put Erdogan in office.
“A short-term border violation can never be a pretext for an attack” - Turkey’s Erdogan in 2012
He should have followed his own words.
Now that Russia has installed its most advanced radar system in Syria, the Turks will not be able to shoot down another Russian jet. Putin, will have Russian jets continually cross Turk airspace on purpose while daring them to do something about it. Putin is going to kick sand in Erdogans face and make him like it.
Russia can easily shoot down Turkish aircraft violating Syrian air-space without danger of engaging the NATO.
There is also the matter of the Turkish shrine to Suleyman Shah which Edrogan thinks he can pick up and move anywhere he wants inside Syria. It would be a shame if something bad were to happen to it.
There are literally dozens of ways Russia can provoke a shooting war without “attacking” Turkey if it wants to...which is what I predict is going to happen.
Putin doesn't have the high ground any more than he does in Ukraine, the shooting down of a civilian airliner, or seizing Crimea. Putin had his ambassador in Ankara called in twice in successive days prior to the shoot down warning against repeated violations of Turkish airspace.
NATO denounces Russian incursion into Turkish airspace
Putin is playing to his domestic audience with his "masterful" response. He is talking and acting tough because it is politically expedient to do so. This will blow over.
There is no way in HELL that France, Germany or any other NATO ally, particularly bath house Barry is going into a hot war with Russia over Turkey. No Way In HELL!
There is No Way In HELL! a hot war is going to result. Neither side wants it. Not going to happen.
Turkey has lots more to lose in this than Russia including a hasty forced exit from NATO.They can also kiss goodbye any chance of ever getting into the EU, A desire they have had for decades.
Turkey will remain in NATO. There was no way Turkey was ever going to get into the EU. Anyone who knows anything about their application knows that the EU will never admit Muslim Turkey into the EU. The latest wave of Muslim migrants into Europe killed any infinitesimal chance of Turkey joining the EU.
Turkey will make a formal and public apology and they will eat crow and pay compensation to Russia and the downed pilots family.
Turkey is in the process of returning the dead pilot's body to the Russians. Erdogen has already issued an apology, i.e. he wished it never happened. He will not apologize for defending his airspace. He also has a domestic audience.
Putin, though a scum and thug, is a real man. Obama is Putinâs bitch and they both know it.
You sound like a teenage girl or you have a man-crush on Putin. You can focus on personalities, but national interests are involved. Is Erdogen a "real man"? Here is something that should get your juices going:
That's the way the real world works. Did you ever wonder why Europe was so supportive of the Iran deal? Follow the money.
Iran seeks $30bn of new oil contracts
Iran has overhauled the way in which it offers contracts to foreign energy companies in a bid to attract up to $30bn of new investment.
The terms of the new oil contracts will be more favourable to foreign investors, who will be allowed a greater stake in long-term profits.
Iran is gearing up for the lifting of sanctions following the nuclear deal with six world powers in July.
The country has some of the biggest oil and gas reserves in the world.
The new contracts were announced at a conference in Tehran attended by many of the world's major energy companies, including BP, Shell, Total, Statoil and Sinopec. There were, however, no US companies present.
The energy majors are keen to exploit Iran's abundant reserves of oil.
