#46: Chris Montez: "Time After Time"
He was born Ezekiel Montanez in 1943 in Los Angeles. His early work, which had a hard sound, sent him touring England with Tommy Roe, and the opening act was the Beatles before they broke out. Chris commented at the time, "Who are these guys? The Beatles? I try to keep up with the British scene, but I don't know their work." He would find out soon enough.
He turned to Herb Alpert, signing with his A&M label, and softened his sound. Alpert brought in some of his Tijuana Brass sidemen to complement Montez' voice, and the result was two major hits.
This was a Frank Sinatra tune from the Forties that got an updating.

More soft rock than bubblegum. It’s the Alpert touch.

My brother retired in January to Tennessee, but has unretired and is going back to the slope with a company that REALLY wanted him, and with whom he has dealt with before as an employee of a different company. He’s pretty excited and word has already gotten around...AJ is coming back. He already knows lots of people, the routine, ALL the facilities.
He texted me Wednesday evening asking what we were doing for Thanksgiving. He came and surprised my Mom. He’s in town for maybe a week more, and then back up to the slope and to work.
He and his wife are renovating and updating their 42’ sailboat. They are working on selling their home in Tennessee and heading back closer to water. When Gypsy is done and good to go, then they sail south and decide where they might like to settle.

#7: The Monkees: "Last Train to Clarksville"
Movie director Bob Rafelson and TV producer Bert Schneider invented a TV show about a rock band that wanted to become the Beatles but never did. Don Kirshner, who was Bobby Darin's partner in the Brill Building, handled the music. The Wrecking Crew provided the musical beds for the four guys, but eventually they learned to play instruments and become a real band. Their show only lasted two years.
The song was by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, two veterans of the Brill Building.
