GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump says he does not know the disabled New York Times reporter he is accused of mocking.
"I have no idea who this reporter, Serge Kovaleski is, what he looks like or his level of intelligence," Trump said in a statement posted on Twitter on Thursday. "I don't know if he's J.J. Watt or Muhammad Ali in his prime--or somebody of less athletic or physical ability."
Trump cited an article written by Kovaleski in 2001, when he wrote for The Washington Post, that appeared to corroborate the businessman's story of seeing Arab-Americans in New Jersey celebrating as the World Trade Center towers came down.
After Kovaleski, who suffers from a chronic condition that impairs the movement of his arms, went on CNN to renounce the report, Trump appeared to mimic the journalist on stage at a South Carolina rally.
"Now the poor guy, you gotta see this guy: 'Uhh, I don't know what I said. I don't remember.' He's going, 'I don't remember. Maybe that's what I said,' " Trump said at the rally, flailing his arms as he imitated Kovaleski. "That was 14 years ago--they didn't issue a retraction."
The New York Times said it is "outrageous" that Trump would "ridicule the appearance of one of our reporters."
But Trump now claims that he has no idea what Kovaleski looks like.

We're not all disabled, RR. And there's nothing wrong with basic civility.
Remember how nasty the Left was in its attacks against Palin's youngest son? I'm sure you'd agree that the behavior of the Left was disgusting.
With that said, as stated earlier, I don't know whether Trump really was mocking a disability. I finally found some video of the reporter talking. If just his face, for example, were on camera, no one would know that he had a disability. He doesn't speak at all the way Trump was speaking.
Not at all.
I pay very little attention to what the press says. Trump could have very well just responded...look at his previous article. Much more mature response.
And once again...why would you assume that?
He exposed them and they’re trying to make him pay.
That’s all this is about.
They want to control it all.
When people like that are exposed, they tell even more fantastical lies to assassinate the exposer’s character.
I read that in a psych book.
Smearing.
Narcissism is widespread and institutional now.
—He was obviously mocking the guy physically which doesnât bother me.Should own up to it.—
Trump does the identical schtick in every speech mocking the political and media “elite”. Were those other folks also disabled?
It IS OK to make fun of anybody!!!! What do you think has always been the basis of comedy? If you are so thin skinned you can’t take what you dish out, tough! PC has destroyed people’s common sense. There is NOTHING to be gained by being a wussie.
We are all at a disadvanged.
berdie,
Have you heard “War on Woman”. Hillary campaign will be on Woman. get ready to help her.
All righty then. ;)
Back in the olden days when I was a kid (1950s) it was not alright to mock people with disabilities. It had nothing to do with PC...it had to do with consideration for other people. My Mom would have smacked me across the room for doing such a thing.
So...if you think it is o.k. and destroying common sense to do so...well o.k.
The Fabulists...
What the heck are you talking about?
You never seem to give a good answer.
I met her hitch hiking, told her to hop in.
You have a good imagination.
Whoever made that screencap chose the frame carefully to show Trump with his wrist at a weird angle to match the reporter’s disability.
It’s dishonest.
They are here, even on FR.
You miss the point. You were talking about not making fun of women or of men. I think anybody is subject to being the point of a joke and if you can’t take it you don’t live in the real world. This business about “people with disabilities” has been stretched well beyond its normal meaning in order to create a hit piece on Trump. Secondly, if you earn your living writing hit pieces, you are automatically asking to be refuted and have no right to climb behind your disability to misinform people. Play politics and bear the insults. Dish it out, expect to have to take it.
Most importantly,The SUBJECT was whether or not there were Muslims celebrating when the twin towers fell. It was a FACT. It DID happen, yet the FACT now has been lost in the swarm of false indignation over the journalist who wrote an article 14 years ago and whether he lied then, or is lying now. The SUBJECT has been changed to trying to blame TRUMP for something I didn’t see him do, and has moved peoples concentration over to disparaging Trump instead of being indignant over the actions of the Muslims! Just who do you think PAID the NYT to target TRUMP???????? It was a HIT PIECE to get the focus away from the Muslims!!!!!
You see what I see. Clear as a bell!
“Whoever made that screencap chose the frame carefully to show Trump with his wrist at a weird angle to match the reporterâs disability.
Itâs dishonest.”
Sure as hell is. Gutter politics at its finest. I see a lot of people here like swimming in the sewer with the NYT. Go Trump Go
I’m not missing the point at all. I was responding to a post that accused me of women vs men. All are equal in my mind.
As I see it...Trump made his disability an issue. Not the crappy journalist. Do you have evidence to the contrary? It might be best to hit a person on substance instead of physical issues, don’t you think?
I don’t say it didn’t happen, because the area I live in would never show such a thing. But I watched a lot of national coverage.
The NYT and all media outlets attack our candidates. With lies....is that a real surprise? Trump is not immune.
How could Trump mock a handicapped reporter he neither ever saw, nor met??
You seek trouble that isn’t there, in the same way the Trump derangement syndrome has affected the media midgets caught trying to make a pig’s ear out of a silk purse, with regard to this non-story.
