The country's military said it was following the same protocol it would have for any aircraft as officials insisted they did not know the nationality of the bomber jet.
The Turkish military said in a statement: "The nationality of the plane was not known... and the rules of engagement were automatically used."
It also said it tried to rescue the plane's pilots and invited Russian defence and military officials to its Ankara headquarters to explain the incident.
The Turkish army released a series of audio recordings of officials reportedly warning plane before it was shot down.
A voice in one of the recordings can be heard repeating: "This is Turkish Air Force speaking on guard. You are approaching Turkish airspace. Change your heading south immediately."
A Turkish official previously claimed the doomed jet ignored 10 warnings in five minutes to leave Turkish airspace.
It was shot down by F16 Fighting Falcon jets belonging to Turkey.

Turkmen rebels in Syria, shot the Russian helo down with a TOW missile.
“Yes, the Turks shot it down and ISIS took care of the Russian chopper. You got it.”
No, ISIS was no where near the chopper. The FSA’s 1st Coastal Brigade claimed responsibility for shooting down the chopper.
“Interesting who is who here.”
It’s more interesting to see who knows what they’re talking and who doesn’t.
Yes. Turkey shot down the jet. Turkmen shot up the Helicopter.
Turkey didn’t F up. They responded to their airspace being violated.
Russia has no military options to respond to Turkey. They got caught with their hand in the cookie jar and got slapped.
They can bomb rebels in Syria, but nothing they can do against the Turks and they will do nothing.
They did did they? Thanks for reporting in.
If you worked for me, I'd fire you.
“They did did they?”
Yep.
“Thanks for reporting in.”
You’re welcome. It’s the 21st century. Ignorance is elective. Don’t choose it.
I seriously doubt anybody will ever be “working for you”.
Beyond that, if you feel the Russians can do something militarily against the Turks...let’s hear your grand delusion.
Still further, watch and learn. They will do nothing.
They were F-16s, not F-15s.
The latest report I saw was that it wasn’t a Russian helicopter that was shot down, but a Russian-made helicopter that belonged to the Syrian military.
I never told you I felt anything. And this is not about me, or what I would do.
ISIS, FSA, Al nusra = snickers, milky way, baby Ruth.
All the same, slight variation in the serving of nuts.
I can’t deal with these Turkey headlines the day before thanksgiving. It takes re reading a few times until I can figure out why some bird is not shooting at aircraft
Seems reports are changing.
Btw, even if true, that will probably not alleviate the anger on the Russian side. It is what it is.
No...there’s a Friend or Foe (IFF) transponder. It was probably identified as either Syrian or Russian. Since the Ruskies had violated airspace numerous times before, it was downed. Pretty sure the warning would have been given as they headed towards Turk airspace, then downed once they entered.
How did the Turkmen know the exact area to be in when the Russian jet came down, so that they could shoot the Russian pilots parachuting out?
If you’d been there, there’s lots of small villages in that area. Probably did some bombing runs in that area, which makes the natives even more enthusiastic about shooting parachuting pilots. Probably haven’t had a class lately on the Law of Armed Conflict like our guys get ad nauseum.
Now the Turkish PM states that isis is a brother muslim state that should have an embassy in Turkey.>p> It's all in the open now. The soetoro regime and Turkey, along with the Saudis and other Gulf states have been arming and supplying isis. imam obama has engaged America in great evil.
Where is Congress?
I could see them definitely bombing the Turkmen, since they’re Turks left behind once the Ottoman Empire collapsed. I highly doubt the Turks told them not to bomb ISIS, but for sure they were probably warned about bombing the Turkmen, and other allies in that area, that are anti-Assad.
