The country's military said it was following the same protocol it would have for any aircraft as officials insisted they did not know the nationality of the bomber jet.
The Turkish military said in a statement: "The nationality of the plane was not known... and the rules of engagement were automatically used."
It also said it tried to rescue the plane's pilots and invited Russian defence and military officials to its Ankara headquarters to explain the incident.
The Turkish army released a series of audio recordings of officials reportedly warning plane before it was shot down.
A voice in one of the recordings can be heard repeating: "This is Turkish Air Force speaking on guard. You are approaching Turkish airspace. Change your heading south immediately."
A Turkish official previously claimed the doomed jet ignored 10 warnings in five minutes to leave Turkish airspace.
It was shot down by F16 Fighting Falcon jets belonging to Turkey.

And the helicopter they shot down ...
didn’t know whose it was either?
So basically they were just shooting at random jets hoping they would get one of Assad’s?
The Turkey’s of Turkey torqueing the truth.
Note that some reports indicate that the incursion into Turkish airspace lasted all of 30 seconds.
LOL, that probably means the Russian jet was never in Turkish airspace.
SPIN
“We had to shoot it down, see, to find out who was in it.”
If Turkey was a golfer it would get penalized two strokes for improving its lie.
So they were just a happy to shoot an Israeli, American, French plane? No ID,,, coulda been a non military machine even.
The Turk moslems are getting wrapped into their lies.
On top of this, there are fresh reports starting to pop up that a Turkish “Aid” convoy was destroyed by an aerial attack near Aleppo. Activists and people on the ground are claiming that they were Russian aircraft.
In other words, they are getting scared. They screwed up, NATO knows, Russia knows, and they are covering their back. My take...
Threadwin!
They’re scared of Putin.
Turkey f.d up. They made a bad choice.
“In other words, they are getting scared. They screwed up, NATO knows, Russia knows, and they are covering their back. My take...”
And likely pretty close to accurate, too.
They know the Russians are PO’d, and they also know that NATO isn’t going to back them up on it.
Obama may, but not NATO.
If they screw with the Russians again, they are going to get hurt. The quiet evacuation of Russian Citizens from Turkey is probably sending VERY loud message that even a muzzie like Erdogan can’t ignore.
Scared? Wasn’t it reported today that the Russian response was, “Don’t do it again.”?
Sounds like a Turkish “aide” convoy was bombed in Syria tonight.
“And the helicopter they shot down ...
didnât know whose it was either?”
That was shot down by Syrian rebels, not Turks.
I’m not sure you scramble F15s and shoot someone down in 30 seconds.
I’m not convinced the Turkish government was thrilled when they heard a Russian aircraft had been shot down either.
I suspect there were some gung-ho pilots out there, getting their masters in trouble.
