Trump Golf Course erects Civil War monument and liberals are upset

In an undated handout photo, a plaque at the Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Va., commemorates a stretch of the Potomac as the “River of Blood” due to casualties there during the Civil War.

Between the 14th hole and the 15th tee of one of the club's two courses, Mr. Trump installed a flagpole on a stone pedestal overlooking the Potomac, to which he affixed a plaque purportedly designating "The River of Blood."

"Many great American soldiers, both of the North and South, died at this spot," the inscription reads. "The casualties were so great that the water would turn red and thus became known as 'The River of Blood.'"

The inscription, beneath his family crest and above Mr. Trump's full name, concludes: "It is my great honor to have preserved this important section of the Potomac River!"

Like many of Mr. Trump's claims, the inscription was evidently not fact-checked.

"No. Uh-uh. No way. Nothing like that ever happened there," said Richard Gillespie, the executive director of the Mosby Heritage Area Association, a historical preservation and education group devoted to an 1,800-square-mile section of the Northern Virginia Piedmont, including the Lowes Island site.

"The only thing that was remotely close to that," Mr. Gillespie said, was 11 miles up the river at the Battle of Ball's Bluff in 1861, a rout of Union forces in which several hundred were killed.

Unless there are authenticated maps of the battle, then there is no proof it didn't happen.

Yes, there are good maps of every battle that took hundreds of lives or more in the Eastern theater of the war.

And that's besides the point.

If you're going to claim that a battle happened there when there is zero historical record of it, it's on you to prove that it happened - not to someone else to prove the negative.

it took several months for Stonewall to put together battle reports

Jackson was an extremely eccentric individual - his habits are not predictive of the entire Confederate and Union officer corps.

And he is not the only person in his brigade to be tasked with preparing reports.

And his brigade were not the only units to be engaged in action.

Simple fact: there is no archaeological and documentary record of any battle action on that spot.

None whatever.

That spot is known in Civil War history.

It is near where J.E.B. Stuart forded his cavalry on his advance toward Gettysburg.

His cavalry met no resistance there (the area was under Confederate control).

This clown is entitled to invent imaginary history.

This clown is entitled to invent imaginary history.

And nitpicking clowns are entitled to criticize while ignoring the greater good of remembering and commemorating our honored Confederate & Union war dead.

If it were anyone else but Trump, you would have nothing to say about it.

I’m with you. To the point where, to the bemusement of the family that paid for him, I once got into an argument with a Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide on Little Round Top over the point where Chamberlain refused the line.

But I’m also very much inclined to view this thing as just a gotcha swipe at Trump. He’s too into his businesses to be a military histoy hobbiest, and probably just took some underlings assurance on the plaque.

Anything that upsets liberals must be wholesome, moral, Christian, and logical.

Of course it is! Does anyone really think that these historical authorities among us would give a rip if it were anyone BUT Trump who arranged this commemorative plaque?

Not even close.

“That was a prime site for river crossings,” he explained the Times. “So, if people are crossing the river, and you happen to be in a civil war, I would say that people were shot—a lot of them. ...Write your story the way you want to write it. You don’t have to talk to anybody. It doesn’t make any difference. But many people were shot. It makes sense.”

He is running for president for heaven’s sake and needs to be able to present at least a token offer an evidence to corroborate a historical claim of such supposed major import.

You and a few other posters afflicted with TDS are focused on what is a picayune detail that for you, opens the door to just one more session of 'bash Trump', while ignoring the historical good Trump is doing by remembering and COMMEMORATING some of our Confederate (and Union) War dead.

By lying about it?

I'm willing to bet if YOUR candidate had put up this monument you would be just full of praise with zero criticisms.

I'm willing to bet that Ted Cruz has too much respect for the truth to even consider a stunt like this.

They finally found the reason Trump should not be President. At least it’s not a dog on his car...

Having been involved in many debates over historical matters that are much more semantical than the general site of a claimed battle, I can bluntly answer yes, yes they would.

It’s almost like some people on FR seriously actually see this as some issue to be incensed about.

It’s in the wrong place? Oh! Ok. Trump will pay a couple of bills to have the plaque changed to honor the sacrifice of those that died where it did.

And these loon-bats can go find something else to waste people’s time on.

“Sorry to disappoint but my hackles are still lowered. It’s just yet another example of Trump being Trump, and Trump fanatics believing anything. Both of which are very amusing. “

It’s a mistake on a plaque. a few bucks will make it commemorate the loss of life without it having to be on the exact spot so you can sleep easier.

If you are one of those loud-mouth FR Cruz groupies looking for anything to trash Trump on (even MSM stories), you are doing him no favors by barking like a fool over something so trivial.

Geesh, probably since it is his golf course.

Perhaps an attitude adjustment is in order?

Oh, so remembering our honored dead from the War Between the States is a STUNT?

The exact and precise geographical location of the event (and the plaque) is irrelevant, and your candidate would tell you to show some class and just be glad SOMEONE did something to remember them.

Oh but wait, it's Trump so you start automatically foaming at the mouth.

They are scrapping at the bottom of the barrel for scraps. Newt puts in perspective.

"I am not going to lead a demonstration over this," said the member, Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker. "It's a country club with a golf course, for Pete's sake."

Both will lie when they don’t have to, the difference is that the Times isn’t running for president.

Oh they're just like the GOPe, trying to grasp something, anything to attack Trump with.

Precisely. Good post FRiend.

No, you just don’t get it.

We shouldn’t vote for this man. He LIED I tell ya! LIED!!!!

It’s like the Twilight Zone around here these days, what becomes an infraction, and what people can make excuses for from the other camp.

Let me explain something. If Trump had put the golf course on the actual battlefield, holy hell would have broken loose.

He did the right thing here, and only children will fail to realize it.

More and more, it’s looking like only children are backing a certain candidate who will go unmentioned. It’s not the leader.
