The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announces that it has approved Fluad, the first seasonal influenza vaccine containing an adjuvant.
Fluad, which is manufactured using an egg-based process, is formulated with the adjuvant MF59, an oil-in-water emulsion of squalene oil.
The study showed that Fluad induced antibody levels that were comparable to the levels induced by Agriflu [i.e., no better.]
Fluad was approved using the accelerated approval regulatory pathway, which allows the FDA to approve products for serious or life-threatening diseases based on evidence that the product has an effect on an outcome that is reasonably likely to predict clinical benefit

Every flu vaccine targets the elderly.
Many thanks for the ping!
Squalene sounds like a very nasty additive!
I thought anti-vaccine hysteria was a leftist thing.
Some vaccines are developed in human cell cultures derived from cells taken from aborted fetuses. (The abortions themselves occurred long ago; the cell culture lines are self-perpetuating.) I don't like that any more than you do, but those are the facts.
The flu vaccine is *not* one of those vaccines, however. Flu vaccines are developed in fertilized chicken (or sometimes duck) eggs, so the embryos and fetuses involved are unborn chickens. That's why they always ask you if you're allergic to eggs before they give you a flu shot.
Ping...
I think last year they targeted the wrong virus.
The only one acting like a liberal is you.
Stop with the hysterical, fear mongering yourself.
The accusations you are making is merely bullying someone into agreeing with your position. No one is *anti-science* and *anti-western* just because they don’t agree with you.
And you’d present your pseudo-intellectual stance much better of you spelled *flu* correctly.
Oh, dear, you posted some valuable information, which does have implications for health and cost of vaccines, and then you followed it up with a load of hooey.
It really looks bad when this kind of stuff is posted on a conservative website. Conservatives have the edge when it comes to rational thought, but then someone like you has to come along and dump a load of “evidence” that conservatives are just as wacky and full of conspiracy as any liberal nut job.
BTW, the value of adding adjuvant to a vaccine is that the adjuvant stimulates the immune system so that a smaller dose of antigen (the protein part of the vaccine that induces antibody formation) can be used. This decreases the cost of production, and thus, the cost of vaccines.
No. There is not a single vaccine that uses embryonic stem cells.
The truth is that many vaccines are grown in human cell lines--cells that originally came from a human being, but which have been "immortalized", so that they can be grown forever. Two of the cell lines used, unfortunately, came from aborted babies, and according to cogforlife.org, a third cell line has been developed from aborted babies. The fact that these cell lines were derived from aborted babies does not mean that babies have to continue to be aborted to maintain the cells--the cell lines will last forever without further deaths. (Unless you count dead fetal calves, which are necessary to feed the cells. But no one seems to care much about cows, born or unborn.)
Not all vaccines are grown in cell lines derived from aborted babies. If you do a little research, you can usually find an alternative grown in cells derived from an ethical source and ask for that.
Many researchers are aware that a lot of people object to being vaccinated with a vaccine grown in cell lines from aborted babies, and use alternate cell lines to develop new vaccines. It takes over a decade to develop a new vaccine. You do have a say in the development of new vaccines, by making sure that you use vaccines from ethical cell lines when possible, and by writing to the pharmaceutical companies and expressing your desire for alternatives to MRC-5, WI-38, WALVAX 2, and any other cell line derived from aborted babies.
BTW, pharmaceutical companies cannot just change the cells they use to grow vaccines. Such a change requires a new round of testing and FDA approval.
One issue.
If that was the case, why not let the antivaccine people win and send in the bug?
I am not a pro vaccine person. The current schedule is nuts. But I am very skeptical of some of the claims made by the anti vax people.
The H3N2 component of the flu vaccine last year was not very effective (less than 50%) because the circulating strain was changing (mutating) rapidly last year. At the beginning of the flu season, it was more effective than at the end, when the virus had changed significantly. The other components, the H1N1 and influenza B, worked well.
This year, the H3N2 component has been reformulated. Indications are that it is a fairly good match for the circulating virus, although this early in the season, it is difficult to find published efficacy measurements.
Even if the vaccine does not fully protect you from the flu, it can still provide partial protection, which prevents the flu from being as severe as it might otherwise be. This decrease in severity can mean the difference between life and death.
Between 30,000 and 50,000 people die of flu every year.
I receive influenza vaccine every year; my employer requires it. I have never, as far as I know, had the flu.
If vaccines are part of some big conspiracy to control population, they are failing horribly at it. Prior to vaccination and antibiotics, the average life span was under 40. With the introduction of those two technologies, infectious disease is no longer the #1 cause of death (it is still in the top ten), and people live long enough to get cancer and heart disease. The average life span, thanks to vaccines and antibiotics, is now close to 80--over double what it was before modern medicine.
If "the elites" are engaged in some big conspiracy to kill off the "excess population", they really need to come up with a better method than life-saving medical technologies.
“If “the elites” are engaged in some big conspiracy to kill off the “excess population”, they really need to come up with a better method than life-saving medical technologies”
They have. It is called abortion on demand and planned parenthood.
See also the Gates Foundation. Eliminating excess population is one of their stated goals.
Last time I checked, Bill and Melinda Gates were considered “elites”.
Originally, anti-vaccine hysteria was a religious thing--using vaccines prevented people from getting sick, and thus went against God's plan for those people. (God's plan, presumably, being for large numbers of people to die painful deaths from disease.)
The modern anti-vaccine movement, however, is a leftist thing that bloomed in the 1960s, along with the "health-food" movement and other "alternative" medicine fads. It is sad to see so many so-called conservatives fall for it.
Oh, I am well aware of those.
The medical profession does not promote abortion as routine health-care. If you pay attention to those who claim that abortion *is* routine health-care, you notice that they are either abortion industry workers who stand to profit from abortion, or they are leftist activists who support any violent means necessary to achieve their "utopian" ends. Those who promote abortion as if it is the only "health-care" that matters are, in fact, trying to distract people from the decreased availability of real health-care resulting from efforts to socialize medicine. IOW, we are not supposed to notice that we can't get vaccinated or have our ailments treated because we are so happy to have unrestricted access to abortion during and even after pregnancy.
The real medical profession advocates vaccines, exercise, and healthy diet with the goal of helping people live longer, healthier lives.
There is no “real medical profession”. Just a bunch of factions of the same industry.
The biggest bunch of liberal hypocrites is the AMA. Yet they hold themselves out as real medical professionals. Professionals in that they are paid, yes, but they are agenda driven.
Separate the money from the vaccine pushers, and you will quickly see them lose interest.
Civil engineering has done far more to improve public health than the medical industry. Clean water and flush toilets are what the world needs. bWithout those, all the vaccines in the world are worthless.
“and then you followed it up with a load of hooey”
Which part was “hooey”?
Just about everything you put after the article excerpt was hooey. Phrases cherry-picked out of legitimate medical literature in order to push an agenda are hooey. If you are going to quote medical sources, quote them in enough context that you relay what the original authors (who are physicians and medical researchers) were actually saying. Don’t misrepresent their words.
There is no âreal medical professionâ. Just a bunch of factions of the same industry.
I do not know what that is supposed to mean. Every time you go to the doctor, you are visiting a member of the medical profession. I am a researcher, and I am also a member of the medical profession. The medical profession consists of people who devote their careers to improving people's health.
Separate the money from the vaccine pushers, and you will quickly see them lose interest.
What is wrong with making profit for providing needed services? It costs hundreds of millions of dollars to develop a vaccine--do you seriously expect the companies who make those investments to then give away the vaccines? If you are really a conservative, then why do you bash profit?
Civil engineering has done far more to improve public health than the medical industry. Clean water and flush toilets are what the world needs. bWithout those, all the vaccines in the world are worthless.
No amount of civil engineering in the world can stop airborne/respiratory diseases like measles or any other disease that spreads through vectors other than dirty water. If sanitation were all that is required to prevent infectious disease, those diseases would have been wiped out thousands of years ago. Romans had excellent sanitation, yet still had disease outbreaks. And, last I checked, most of the US has very good sanitation, yet infectious disease is still a top ten killer.
No.
Sorry.
I may have been a bit harsh, but the anti-vaccine nonsense is as bad as global warming, worse in some ways.
Flue is autocorrect.
I see nothing wrong with not getting the flu vaccine.
I have never chosen to get it. I don’t think it is necessary. Millions of people do, though, and they get it year after year and have no consequences, and maybe don’t get the flu when they might otherwise have.
It is not some sinister scheme to make greedy capitalists money or that will harm people.
