Protesters took to the streets in the wake of the release of dash cam footage showing police shooting a teen being shot by police, chanting "16 shots" for the number of times the officer allegedly shot him.
The dash cam video, released by police today a day ahead of a court-ordered deadline, shows officers confronting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, who later died at a hospital, as he walked down the street on Oct. 20, 2014.
Chicago police officials said they were responding to a report of a person walking down the street with a knife and that McDonald refused to drop the knife when ordered.
The video shows puffs of smoke coming from the ground at some points, which court documents said were caused by bullets.
A prosecutor at Officer Jason Van Dyke's hearing said that McDonald did not step towards the officer, but the officer allegedly took at least one step towards him.
Van Dyke was charged with first degree murder and stripped of his pay and policing powers, police officials said today. He was held without bond.
"It's certainly everyone's right to make a judgment about it but I would just state that the judgment made by individuals who have viewed this tape from the comfort of their living room, on their sofa ... it's not the same," Van Dyke's lawyer, Dan Herbert said.

Depraved heart.
Why does Walsh stop for a basketball game? Was it midnight? Joe should go the distance.
The year delay was so that Rahm Emmanuel could get reelected as Mayor. This is Chicago after all.
Had several hundred hours of training for such under Ayoob and Cooper.
Strange. This is the only article I see on this, and it wasn’t even on the main page.

Congratulations you prove my point! Note my tag; There are many times I become exasperated with FRs because they don’t read others postings. While I may have deliberately misspelled Emanuel just to prove (because no FR corrected it) that they are never read. If you did read what I posted I do believe I posted Walsh s broadcast times.
Let me know when they have a protest for Johnyla Watkins. (black infant who was shot by a gangbanger while her gangbanger father - the intended target - was changing her diaper)
Selective Outrage.
That said...there is something really really wrong in the black community that you'd see a seventeen year old running up the street with knife in hand high on PCP. Societal decay in my book...but...
Shooting this guy 16 times? Man I watch the video and as he lay on the ground, you could see the officers rounds ricocheting off the pavement.
I hope this cop gets life in prison. 16 rounds...good grief!
Evidently you routinely drive drunk, but I don’t.
You really shouldn’t be talking about bath houses and Obama at the same time.
There is no doubt this was wrong and the cop should be prosecuted to the highest degree. But here is what outrages me and I suspect many others. It is the fact that blacks can kill blacks, blacks can kill whites and it is just regular every day murder. Yet there is selective memory when a white kills a black because it becomes a national murder, obviously racism was involved, that black life matters far more than anyone else’s. No excuse for cops, but let’s get real, they see the crime, the violence the hatred every day. They see the aftermath of murders like Amanda Blackburn and every other innocent white person, as well as cops. The cops are on edge, they know society is at war and they DO want to go home to their families alive every day. Hell yes, many are ready to pull the trigger way too soon, can’t blame them. There are communities throughout this country that are battle fields, like bombs were dropped, and the cops have to go in walking on eggshells, kissing criminals asses, and no one is made reaponsible for these third world zones except whitey.
“The whole incident happened over a year ago but the video was released now.”
Dashboard-camera video shows Laquan McDonald, 17, shot and killed by Officer Jason Van Dyke in Chicago in October 2014.
The reason that this was covered up was to allow Rahm Emanuel to be reelected without any such distraction as another black man shot dead during Rahm’s reign and only five months before the voting would commence.
Rahm Emanuel Wins Runoff Election to Secure 2nd Term as Chicago Mayor

The first degree murder charge is applicable because he did not stop at immobilizing the victim. Once he’s on the ground, the danger is relieved. Pumping 14 more shots into him indicates pre-meditation to end his life.
Gotcha. And thanks much for the explanation. It makes sense now.
How could the perp shoot anyone with a knife?
Where are the people saying those deaths were justified? The difference is that in cases like this one where the cop shoots the kid who was posing no threat to anyone then a large percentage of the people come out and say the kid had it coming and the cop was justified in shooting him. Nobody is saying that any of those 396 victims had it coming or are out there supporting the killer and saying he was justified in doing it.
Shoot you with a pocket knife?
So shoot him on sight?
I don’t excuse this. The first two shots were not necessary but the cop would have gotten away with that much for sure. The fourteen coup de grace shots were first degree murder, pure and simple.
That little hesitation between the first two shots and the remaining shots? Yeah, that’s the moment where the cop decided to kill the suspect.
Now what makes me more angry is that the CPD and Mayor Rahm Emanuel spent over a year trying to destroy and suppress evidence to cover up a murder and they’re not being held accountable for their crimes.
If that Mayor was a Republican then Obama would be on this like black on coal. But the mayor is Obama’s bath house buddy so we won’t hear anything from the White Hut.
