Republican presidential contender Donald Trump doubled down Monday night on his support for waterboarding terrorist suspects, saying the interrogation method worked â and even âif it doesnât work, they deserve it anyway for what theyâre doing to us.â
Speaking at a rally in Columbus, Ohio, Trump returned to a topic that caused a stir when he said on ABC âThis Weekâ on Sunday that as president he would bring back waterboarding.
âWould I approve waterboarding? And I said, well, let me ask you a question. On the other side, they chop off our young peopleâs heads, and they put them on a stick.
âOn the other side, they build these iron cages, and theyâll put 20 people in them. And they drop them in the ocean for 15 minutes and pull them up 15 minutes later,â Trump said. âWould I approve waterboarding? You bet your ass I would ⦠in a heartbeat. In a heartbeat.â
âAnd I would approve more than that,â he continued. âAnd donât kid yourself folks, it works, okay? It works.â
Trump said only a stupid person would argue otherwise. He said that said he knows important people, who want to be politically correct, who go on television and question the effectiveness of waterboarding â but then tell him privately later that it does work.
âAnd you know what? If it doesnât work, they deserve it anyway for what theyâre doing to us,â he said. âBut it works. It works.â
President Obama banned waterboarding and other so-called âenhanced interrogation techniquesâ in 2009.
Anti-torture campaigners maintain that the controversial practice, which is said to simulate drowning, is a form of torture â a position which the Obama administration shares.
Then-State Department legal advisor Harold Hongju Koh said in 2010 that the administration âdefines waterboarding as torture as a matter of law under the Convention Against Torture.â (The U.N. treaty, which the U.S. ratified in 1994, calls on states to criminalize torture and to prosecute âcomplicity or participation in torture.â)
In his 2010 memoir Decision Points, President George W. Bush acknowledged personally approving the âwaterboardingâ of leading al-Qaeda terrorist Khalid Sheik Mohammed. The admission prompted fresh calls by U.N. officials, Amnesty International, and others for the former president to be prosecuted.
Khalid Sheik Mohammed masterminded al-Qaedaâs attacks on the U.S. on 9/11. Almost 3,000 people were killed when 19 terrorists seized passenger planes and flew two of them into the World Trade Center in New York City and a third into the Pentagon. A fourth plane went down in rural Pennsylvania after passengers confronted the hijackers.
Bush has said that the interrogation of Khalid Sheik Mohammed âhelped save lives on American soil.â
I support Cruz, too. But at this point, I’m supporting him because I want him in the #2 spot. I think only Trump has the cash to win a campaign this time around.
With the VP slot under his belt for one or two terms, Cruz will be the next in line. He’ll also really benefit for having seen how it operates up close and personal.

I love this guy.
HAHA!
Talk about throwing PC compassion out the window,
“Look Don we have to show ISIS/L that we are better then they are. They just need jobs, free education and an end to global warming. Those three and some reasoned logic and they will join us in the civilized world. In the end they are just like you and me, its decades of exploitation and white privilege that made them what they are today. A few lectures from our President and they will be teaching in Universities and guests on the Sunday shows,
and leading peaceful protests and sit-in protests here in the US ...
Win their hearts and minds...”
Back in ‘94, I went on the annual VA benefit run to Martinsburg WV and it *poured* rain.
Like a dummy, I thought it would help if I pulled my bandanna up over my nose and mouth.
All that did was channel the pouring rain into my nose and I could not breathe very well.
It was extremely uncomfortable but I obviously did not die and it was not something I would ever want done, again.
Now, if he was advocating the ripping out of fingernails or battery cables attached to yarbles, yeah, maybe it’d be a yuge deal.
:)
Oh, that’s funny! Funny man. Watch Eugene Robinson’s head explode.
Rats can hold their breath for a really long time.
Wouldn’t work.
He certainly makes me smile. LOL.

Hm. She’s at Yale right now. She is mentally impaired in some respects. Absolutely brilliant in others.
Why not waterboard murder suspect or burglary suspects since it works?
It's easy to like honesty.
Wouldnât work.
Ok, but let's do it anyway.... :)
Are you trying to state that people captured without uniform on the battlefield are the same as citizens arrested in the country? I see a great difference between the two and between what rights they each might be entitled to. For example, the Geneva convention allows us to execute on the spot fighters that are not in uniform. I don't want the police to have that power over citizens.
LOL
Classic comment...it’s the kind of truth that makes people listen to him.

I didn't see that qualifier in what Trump said. He just said terror suspects, so I assumed he meant terror suspects here. And he didn't say foreign terror suspects so I assume he meant all suspects, foreign and U.S. citizens. And if it works and he's doing it here then why not on all suspects for all crimes?
Because citizens have rights. Non-citizens do not have rights.
As far as I am concerned enemy combatants that do not abide by the Geneva conventions should not be granted any of their protections. I have read good legal arguments as to why we have to - but I just don’t care.
My 2nd favorite Eastwood movie.
