#3: Len Barry: "1-2-3"

I told the story of Leonard Borishoff when I did the Dovells' biggest hit from 1961. Len would go solo, and then he would spend the Seventies as a producer for the Philly Sound.

#21: The Walker Brothers: "Make It Easy on Yourself"

This tune had originally been recorded by Jerry Butler and was written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach. This was an American band that moved to the UK. No, they weren't actually brothers.

#17: Little Jimmy Dickens: "May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose"

Jimmy (1920-2015) may have been only four-foot-eleven, but he was a country music giant. This is a live recording from 2008 at the Grand Old Opry.

LOL! Little Jimmie Dickens....wonder what prompted the writing of that song?

Johnny Carson was using a similar vein of insult on the “Tonight Show” in those days, so there may be a connection.

#2: The Byrds: "Turn! Turn! Turn!"

This was the folk-rock band that created Jim McGuinn and David Crosby. The song was from the Bible as set to music by Pete Seeger.

I like a lot of those older songs. I’d call them redneck reflections. How do the hicks, the rubes, view the thing? Let’s laugh at them while secretly envying them because they don’t have all this citified clutter in their minds.

#1: The Supremes: "I Hear a Symphony"

The girls went to Berry Gordy's finishing school, learned to use the correct fork and learned that "mother" was more than half a word. This was another huge hit for the Holland brothers and Lamont Dozier. In the cutthroat atmosphere of Hitsville USA, the guys would get a chance to write and produce again.

The Supremes: "I Hear a Symphony"

That's it for this weekend! See you next weekend for the Thanksgiving Special and then November 1966. Cue the Rockumentary theme on Turntable #2!
