No, Donald Trump Doesn't Want to Register All American Muslims. It's Just Another Media Smear.

The New York Times, Trump endorsed the idea of registering all Muslims in the United States with the government.

There’s only one problem: he didn’t.

To understand what Trump actually said, it’s necessary to understand that Trump is essentially a Magic 8 ball when it comes to answering media questions without full information. Trump’s 2016 slogan is “Make America Great Again,” but his secondary slogan could be, “Wing It With The Donald.” His go-to answer when he’s asked questions about topics he doesn’t really get is something along the lines of, “We’re going to have to look at that.”

With that in mind, here’s how the “Trump as Muslim-registering Nazi” meme got going...

If it’s just a media smear, then why would Cruz not agree with Trump on a muslim registry? http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3362989/posts

Trump never suggested a registery. The reporter lied about it.

He should have said “I’m not sure about that right now. But I am sure I will put all reporters in a data base. We need to keep track of you people, see who you’re partying with.”

But how I wish he would. They need to be tagged like dogs and cats.

Let’s remember Trump was quick to jump on the bandwagon when the media was smearing Carson over West Point. Trump undoubtedly learned about commenting too quickly on media quackery from that, as Cruz will from this.

But the problem with such an idea is this: it would only take one murderous attack by a mentally deranged professed Christian, who goes off his meds, for a left-wing administration potentially to say that all Christians in the country need to be “tagged” too. A troubling precedent would already be there. However, this really is moot—nobody has advocated that all Muslims, including peaceful citizens, should be in a database.

Then why wouldn’t Cruz say that instead of saying he disagreed with a report that was not true?

“I’m a big fan of Donald Trump’s, but I’m not a fan of government registries of Americans citizens,” he said when asked about Trump’s remarks on the need for a Muslim-tracking database. “The First Amendment protects religious liberty, and I’ve spent the past several decades defending the religious liberty of every American.”

When a reporter then pressed him on whether he was concerned about Trump’s “messaging” as the frontrunner, Cruz shut down the line of questioning.

“Listen, I like Donald Trump. I recognize the media would love to get me and other candidates to attack Donald Trump,” Cruz added. “There may be other candidates who want to do that — I ain’t going to do it. So, I’ll tell you my policy views, but I have no interest in attacking Donald Trump or, for that matter, attacking Ben Carson. Both are good men. And I’m not interested in throwing rocks at either one of them.”
