Muslim terrorists opened fire on an upscale hotel on Friday in the city of Bamako, the capital of the western African state of Mali.
The jihadists used automatic weapons according to security sources, and apparently have taken people hostage in the Radisson Blu Hotel. Some reports indicate that at least three people have died in the attack.
The luxury hotel, which has 190 rooms, is a popular site for Western officials according to French-language media.
According to the French RFI radio, the attack was launched by three assailants who entered the hotel with diplomatic cars.
Security forces have set up a cordon around the building, and a security source told AFP that "it's all happening on the seventh floor, jihadists are firing in the corridor."

France's Gendarmerie Nationale has tweeted photos of members of the elite GIGN counter-terror unit, leaving Paris to fly to Bamako in response to the ongoing hotel siege.
They come from the same elite unit who were deployed in the aftermath of the Paris attacks last week.

Security forces told Malian journalist Moussa Konda on the scene at they were able to free people trapped in the hotel because attackers did not know the hotel building very well.

Mali’s Interior Minister Salif Traore has said that none of the hostage takers will be able to escape, giving a press briefing outside the Radisson Blu hotel in Mali’s capital, Bamako, where gunmen have been holding people hostage.
“Our special forces soldiers are inside the hotel at this very moment. And as I am speaking to you now, they are searching the building room after room.
“They have been able to free 30 hostages, they are all safe. But three people were shot dead and two of our special forces were wounded, but their lives are not in danger.
“We have sealed all the exit points of the hotel, so be assured none of the hostage takers will be able to escape.”
