Op-ed: We need more than luck to protect us from gun violence
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | Nov 14 2015 | Rachel Borup

Last weekend I took my 9-year-old on a mother-daughter date to Fashion Place Mall. As we sat in the crowded food court enjoying an ice cream, two white men in their early 20s walked by our table, each wearing jeans, a tucked-in T-shirts and a prominently displayed gun in its holster. The men walked slowly and seemed to enjoy the fact that people in the food court were visibly alarmed by their conspicuous exhibition of weapons.

My immediate response was fear for my and my daughter's lives. We have all seen the tragedies in the news. We've heard how these incidents play out; a man calmly walks into a crowded public space with a gun and begins shooting innocent people at random. These acts of unconscionable violence are so common and numerous in the U.S. that we refer to them in shorthand by their location: Columbine, Fort Hood, Newtown, Virginia Tech, Aurora, Charleston, Isla Vista, Trolley Square.

Heart pounding, I took my daughter's hand and quickly walked away from the area fearing that today our photos would be the ones in the news, and people would say of us, "They just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time." Upset at leaving her ice cream, my daughter resisted and asked where we were going. When I told her that some men in the food court had guns and it wasn't safe to stay there, her eyes got big with fear, she squeezed my hand and hastened her steps. As soon as we got out of the area, I called mall security and reported the situation.

Pictures of the gun toasting white men or it didn’t happen.

Instead of playing out her nonsensical fear fantasy, she should have imagined how these guys would’ve been the ones able to stop the insane shooter in the unlikely event that one came into the mall.

do guns "toast"? haha

aside from that...crikey. Buy some adult diapers and be done with it. Put your kid in a bubble and teach her to color within the lines and consider yourself a success.

In the meantime, REAL people (white/black/whatever) will be wiping out ISIS and terrorism and making life livable again.

"What is the point of mentioning that they were “white” men?"

Because everybody knows that white dudes carry stainless steel guns with barrels maybe 3-3 1/2" long. Anyone in the know knows that a black or blued firearm with a 4-6" barrel is much more scary and is capable of greater penetration.

If someone started shooting and she was able to call the police, I wonder if she would’ve demanded that they leave their guns at the station?

Well. She’s afraid when she knows someone is carrying a gun; is she also afraid when she doesn’t know whether someone is packing?

I would encourage someone like thus to walk into a gun store. It’s one of the safest feelings in the world, knowing that nearly everyone, including the employees, is armed. You don’t have many nut cases in such places, thinking that they’re going to shoot the place up.

I don’t know about Saltyville. But in East Atlanta I’ve noticed an increase a,t Kroger in people who carry. And from what I hear, it isn’t just East Atlanta.

This started in direct reaction to Bloomberg’s extremists criticizing Kroger, as if Kroger were in the gun business.
Kroger’s sales have boomed. It has been the supermarket success story since attacked by the extremists.

So apparently people are voting with their feet, and with their pocket book. And are not afraid to vote.

PS. East Atlanta, Moreland Ave, is not a right-wing area.

Yet another bit of evidence that our people have completely lost any identification with military service.

When we had the majority of adult citizens taught the profession of arms in the military, seeing one another with weapons was nothing noteworthy. A current example is Israel where most adults carry some sort of firearm with them.

Only useless service-avoiding parasites with zero idea of the escalating threats around us make silly noises like this.

As I grew up, so did my literary tastes and eventually I went on to earn a doctorate in English, teach college lit courses, and write fiction.

The mere sight of a gun sends her heart pounding? There is something wrong with her.

IOW - Mommy shows unreasonable terror and it transfers to her young daughter - the mother did more damage than the young men with guns (if they even existed).

Little does she know that those “white men” would most likely be the first ones to come to her defense if the need arose.

Sorry but there is very little truth in this article. It's so bad that I doubt the broad even has a daughter or was even at the food court. She is probably telling a story that she heard at group therapy or just flat made up.

See post 50 - she's been outed.

Disclaimer: I did NOT read every word but I still failed to see any mention of a man in her life - except for those who were carrying those frightening GUNS! I have to wonder how she managed to have two daughters.
