It took longer than almost anybody expected, but on Thursday night, it looked as though the wheels were finally starting to come off Donald Trump’s run for the presidency. It’s too early to write his political obituary just yet – he’s shown remarkable resilience in the face of ridicule and disdain – but even Trump will have trouble recovering from a day in which he repeatedly compared his chief rival to a “child molester†and invited attendees at a campaign event to bring a knife up on stage and try to stab him.
Trump has been aggressively attacking retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who has pulled even with him in national opinion polls of Republican primary voters. Last weekend, Trump’s attacks became more pointed, and he latched on to a line from Carson’s book, Gifted Hands, in which Carson described his childhood temper as “pathological.â€

No I don’t think he was kidding. Look .. he can say whatever he wants but he won’t be elected President by saying he will blow up oil fields. Trump lacks self-discipline and rambles too much when he speaks.
I am absolutely a concern troll when it comes to Trump! Good lord man, can you imagine 4 or 8 years of Shrillary? I am concerned every time I look at my three beautiful children (all 10 or under)! What kind of nation will we leave them?
It’s easy to sit back and make fun of people for having concerns about Trump, but take yourself out of the FR bubble (where we all know 1000% more than the average voter) and ask yourself how Trump’s shtick will play in a general election against a candidate with the highest negatives I can recall (Hillary).
He would be wise to tone it down a bit. He has the lead so it’s not necessary to throw bombs on your “own side.” He should be transitioning away from the “look at me - winner/loser stuff” to a serious candidate focused more on issues than himself, but he may not have it in him. If that is the case, say hello to President Clinton. Say hello to a radicalized Supreme Court. Say hello to doubling down on the welfare state and disastrous foreign policy. Say hello to begging Mitch McConnell and Boner II to defend our values. How is that working out so far?
The primary season is far different than the general election. Come across as a bully who lacks a shred of humility in the general election and he will lose. Period. That kind of stuff matters to right minded voters and the margin for victory is small. If that makes me a concern troll please sign me up. I like the one with orange hair.
I want a serious candidate who will further conservative principles - not somebody who resembles a reality television show built on stereotypes. It’s possible for Trump to be that person, but not if he continues this irritating shtick and narcissistic bombastic behavior.
We want a fighter, but we need a fighter who fights smart and does not shoot themselves in the foot. The Trump crowd can cheer all they want, but every time you do what he does yesterday you lose more votes in the general election.
The talking heads (mostly concern trolls as well about the Donald) are not all idiots. Trump can defy conventional wisdom to get the nomination, but negatives don’t play well in the general election. He needs to learn to be “Trump” without alienating the most likely people to vote for him. He needs to recognize that the word “we” plays much better than “me.” Carson is not going to be the nominee so make him an ally for the general, pick up his support and supporters, and go for the win!
He is hurting himself by attacking Carson, Carson isn’t the problem with this country, is he getting desperate. Slam Clinton’s and Obozo.
I agree and his constant biblical references are not going to score him any points in a broader general election beyond his narrow base of support. Like it or not, a giant portion of this country isn’t deeply religious. It’s fine to have your convictions, but he’ll turn a lot of people off with constant references to that.

When you say the “party” coming to its senses, do you mean the insider oligarch and plutocrat GOPe string-pullers, or are you talking about we ACTUAL primary voters? And if the latter, then I assume you mean we have no sense now, but somehow we will gain sense and vote for whom exactly as being the most “qualified and competent”? Someone like Romney, Kasich, Christie, or Jeb Bush? They seem to be competent based on their accomplishments as elected officials, and are certainly “qualified”, if by “qualified” you mean having previously held elective office.
However, I for one, consider “qualified” or “competent” as being secondary in importance, compared to whether our next President’s NUMBER ONE goal is to dismantle Obammunism lock, stock and barrel, build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, drive out the 20 million illegal aliens who are currently depressing our wages and stealing our jobs from natural born U.S. citizens, and bring back all of the overseas jobs that the Obammunists have driven offshore. Aside from those, pretty much everything else is simply twaddle in my book.

Your advice is sound. In this case, with this candidate I think it will be ignored.
I don’t pretend to be a shrink, so can’t speculate on Trump’s concious or unconscious motives. Even so, it’s clear that his idea, as he said, of taking the gloves off, is going to lose him some supporters. He has to realize that, right? How many people will look elsewhere we don’t yet know.
I’ve kept track of roughly 50 people in my area of Central Florida since the summer. Maybe 20 of them are dug in for Rubio, Cruz etc. The others were open. Some hated Trump, but began listening and getting excited about him. It’s been a roller coaster! All of them like his positions. ALL.
As of about 10 minutes ago, I’ve received 18 checking in e-mails. All but 3 are now looking at others. Reactions were everything from complete disgust to real disappointment.
This is clearly not scientific, this is just an informal kind of thing that grew out of chats with people I know and we decided to stay in contact through the primaries.

You are correct. If Carson drops out, his supporters will not go to Trump after this tirade against him by Trump. Carson’s supporters will likely go to Cruz.
There are just so many Republican Primary voters, and Trump just lost a large number of them by trying to destroy Carson by a ridiculous exhibition in front of thousands. His pronouncement of Iowa voters as stupid if they support Carson was an act of “Trump suicide by Carson”.
If Trump had any sense, he'd realize that Carson is this cycle's Herman Cain and would just let this front-runner flavor of the month tank in the polls by virtue of his own vacuity. Instead, Trump decided to turn it into something childish and personal. The net result is that Carson gains more sympathy and dignity than candidacy deserves, and can keep calmly droning on in empty platitudes about his biography while Trump looks like a kid throwing a tantrum.
The real casualty here is that neither Trump nor Carson seem to want to talk about policy, but about personalities and biographies, whether their own or their opponents.
I despise the GOP establishment as much as anyone here and may even wind up voting for Trump if Ted Cruz can't break into the top tier, but I don't see how any reasonable person could see Trump's speech as anything more than juvenile ad hominem.There are plenty of things to ridicule and attack in Ben Carson's candidacy (like the fact that he doesn't seem to really understand the concept of a debt ceiling) without comparing him to a child molester.
Agree, he should ignore Dr Ben and allow the man to dig his own hole. Trump should stay quiet about it. Stick to the ISSUES and CONCERNS of the AMERICAN PEOPLE. Dr. Ben presents himself as a very nice, genuine man but we do disagree on many issues...amnesty being the first. As to Trump’s wagon falling apart, don’t believe that for a moment.

Earlier I caught just a couple of minutes of Rush Limbaugh’s show.
He said that, if the speech takes Trump down, Cruz is very well positioned to pick up the pieces and is the man to watch.
