Stdent protests roiled college campuses Thursday, when Claremont McKenna College's dean of students resigned under pressure over racial tensions and protesters at more than 100 colleges and universities nationwide demanded the cancellation of student debt.
Dean Mary Spellman at Claremont McKenna stepped down after she sparked a campus protest and hunger strikes by two students this week over her email to a Latina student saying she would work to serve those who "don't fit our CMC mold."
Spellman later apologized but her remarks appeared to be a tipping point for students who have pressed the campus for months for greater diversity among faculty and staff and more funding for multicultural services.
Spellman's resignation came days after student protests over racial discrimination pushed the University of Missouri's president and chancellor to resign. Hundreds of students at Ithaca College in upstate New York have demanded the resignation of the college's president, Tom Rochon over accusations that he has failed to address racial insensitivity. Racial tensions also prompted hundreds of students to demonstrate this week at Yale University.

We are witnessing the final death throes of the modern university. Brick and mortar schools will begin to die out as they price themselves out of the market, even with “free” money available. Those that survive will do so by offering value added education at a fair price. More and more teaching will be done on line via canned classes that cost very little to offer.
For what it's worth, that city is near me. It is about 50% white, so it's fair to assume that roughly 25% of the population is male and white. Yet not a single upper administrator in the district is white and male. I checked.
Yep :)
I’ll be dead by then.
:-)
YES! The media ( of course) ran with this story. Do you know anyone who cares about this stuff or cared about the Starbuck’s cup? I don’t know a single person who shops at Starbucks who will no longer do so because of a freakin cup.
We have allowed the media to frame the discussion then we wonder why they do, lol.
White liberals are “disinvesting” in the inner-city schools by allowing the administrations to become primarily black and minority. They know a losing proposition when they see it, i.e., if black students are going to fail, then let black administrators take the blame.
I’m not sure why college costs are going up. With technology, you can do Coursa or other classes online for free.
Record lectures from the best experts and speakers in the country. That can handle half of what takes place. Make sure the testing is legit. Go from there.
Colleges are also grade scam mills these days. The average — AVERAGE — grade at Harvard is now A-.
The spoiled brats are ALL told they are the best and brightest and we get our asses kicked by a dozen other countries and wonder why.
Cmc 84 here. You?
It’s not a good thing but if the STUPID taxpayers/voters continue to elect the same pols cycle after cycle who increase the size and scope of government, whose fault is that? People with degrees, especially advance degrees, are not stupid and will go where the money and job security is at. Many of those workers you bemoan either don’t vote or vote stupidly. I have interviewed quite a few of those said private sector workers for those ‘drone’ government positions and even with their college/university degrees many are unqualified even for the mind numbing, idiot work of government. And yes, we knew which college/university degrees weren’t worth the paper they are printed on. If you haven’t guessed yet, yes, I was a CA state employee for 25 years after 15 years in the private sector. I offer no apologies.....
CMC ‘94
Jack Stark must be rolling in his grave......
Well, at least at the CMC Board of Trustees.
These people will pop up again soon enough in some made-to-order cushy positions, either at their current universities or somewhere else. They just need to make it seem they’ve left the scene for now. The idea is to stage the appearance of a spontaneous mass movement. When the mission is accomplished there won’t be any more conspicuous “resignations” over nothing all at the same time.
I saw Reagan at CMC. I have a B&W picture around here somewhere ....
Did you ever work in Seattle?
I know an “EV” from there....
The dean resigns. The mob is still upset. Nothing changes.
Nope, I have worked in Northern Cal or Southern Cal.
Pete Wilson came to campus when I was there.
California Republican governors would visit CMC back when we had those.
