Trump's Immigration Solution: Bring Back Controversial 'Operation Wetback'

by Sandra Lilley

On Tuesday night's Republican presidential debate and again on Wednesday morning, GOP candidate Donald Trump touted the controversial 1950s "Operation Wetback" program as a way of dealing with the nation's approximately 11 million immigrants currently without legal status. Under the Eisenhower program, immigrants inside the U.S. were rounded up and deported to remote places, resulting in deaths and criticism of human rights abuses.

On NPR Wednesday morning, conservative Republican Alfonso Aguilar slammed Trump's comments.

"The Eisenhower mass deportation policy was tragic," said Aguilar. "Human rights were violated, people were removed to remote locations without food and water, there were many deaths, sometimes U.S. citizens of Hispanic origin were removed, it was a travesty, it was terrible. To say it's a success story, it's ridiculous."

A lot of the Eisenhower era illegals self deported once they saw that Eisenhower was serious about sending them packing.

Contrast that with the message that Dubya and Obama have sent, which is that they had no intention of enforcing our laws.

Another way to encourage self deportation is to start using asset forfeiture against illegals. They will want to pack up and go home before they get their stuff seized.

You don’t deport people in places where there is no food or water. How would customs on either side of the border survive?

The patron saint of liberalism, FDR, did this also. Let's also not forget he imprisoned a lot of Americans with Japanese ancestry.

For all practical purposes the demographics of the country were vastly different than today.

86% White

13% Black

1% All other

"There will be no need to round em up and ship em back like Operation Wetback."

There wasn't really all that much rounding up. Thanks to an orchestrated media blitz promising border agent sweeps, most Illegals got the message and headed back.

This time they've been hearing about Trump sending them home for over a year. The self deporting will begin the day Trump takes office.

How Eisenhower solved illegal border crossings from Mexico

It has worked every time it has been tried.

Which is what I wrote. The “you can’t round them up” argument is a bit of a red herring, as most of the people on this forum know; nobody is making that argument.

Hey BU... I would add Landlords to your plan. If someone who should not be here cannot find work or a place to live, they will go home where they belong on their own.

The penalties would have to be harsh for the employers and landlords, but it’s really a very simple plan.

I'm looking in Trump's plan to find where Trump says that he will hire 200,000 judges to to process all the deportations.

I don't see it.

It’s only controversial to those lawbreakers and their enablers.

Mexico deports Cubans, Haitians, Guatemalans, and every other illegal within their borders by the thousands. We should have been doing this all along.

I wouldn`t trust giving ANYONE in this current governmental structure that much power to arrest and detain on such a massive scale, like the so called Patriot Act, IT WILL be abused! Anyone who does not believe this either naive or an idiot, you don`t hand despots and tyrants the rope to hang you.

Instead you beef up the E-Verify system and make it a 'financial death sentence' to employ illegals or give them any aid or assistance, including taxpayer largess.

With no freebies or jobs they`ll self deport. The remaining aliens are criminals engaged in illegal and underground trades like drugs, and can be handled thru the justice system and subsequent forced deportation.

There is no way to check on citizenship for a tenant. I am in the industry and I am familiar with the requirements. Now, as for illegal apartments or renting over capacity, that is an entirely different situation.

Never heard of this agitator. How many rocks did they have to turn over to find him?

Mexico is at 2.6 children per family rapidly working towards demographic oblivion like the rest of us.
