Debate Aftermath: GOP divide on immigration grows, threatening election prospects

The already-bitter divide between Republican presidential candidates over immigration is deepening, a struggle that’s going to keep the party in turmoil well into 2016 – and jeopardize its chances of winning the White House next year.

The clash over how to deal with immigrants in the country illegally sparked the ugliest exchanges of Tuesday's debate, as the two sides showed little taste for even a hint of compromise. They may show agreement on the basic outlines of other core conservative issues, notably tax policy, but the schism on immigration shows no signs of fading.

If anything, it's deepening. Monday, a federal appeals court ruled against President Barack Obama's plan that would protect about 5 million people in this country from deportation, many children brought to the United States illegally by their parents.

The administration plans to appeal the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court, virtually assuring immigration will remains a pressing issue throughout the campaign year.

For Republicans, that means a prolonged brawl.

Those candidates marshaling voter anger are determined to clamp down on what they see as an uncontrollable flood of undocumented immigrants. Their followers are roughly the same voters who created and energized the tea party movement six years ago and cheer the small but vocal House of Representatives' Freedom Caucus. They're the hardcore conservatives who have had enough of compromise.

Their 2016 heroes, real estate mogul Donald Trump and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, continue to lead the Republican pack and show no signs of fading. Just behind is Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas.

Trump's rise coincided with his talk about Mexicans and rapists and his insistence he can and must build a wall between the United States and Mexico. Tuesday, he reiterated his view he’d send undocumented immigrants back where they came from.

Here we go with “we must agree with the Democrats or risk losing to the Democrats” again.

I didn’t see any divide over IMMIGRATION. I saw a divide over freeloading, illegal alien invaders illegally invading America to take a whack at the Big Pinata.

...“Democrats have opened our borders to all manner of horrific Third World violence, crime, and disease. The GOP has supported and endorsed this vile activity every single step of the way. Trump has tapped into the fury of the American people over the unrelenting anti-American NWO push of our paid employees in government. Trump could win this on this one issue alone. Americans are tired of being betrayed by their government on both sides of the aisle.”...

Just say no to globalists, vote Trump!

Carson says we're mean if we pay illegals with low wages and don't reward them with citizenship. Rubio and Jeb think we're mean, too.

Cruz....not really sure where he would stand IF he was elected.

Trump hasn't faltered. Go home....clean up your act...and then knock until we open the door.

Cruz....not really sure where he would stand IF he was elected.

If, as Cruz contends, the illegals are an economic/wages issue, that cannot be corrected by leaving them in place, can it?

The clear inference is a policy of deportation -- beginning with self-deportation.

You're several years late to the game, David Lightman. The bitter divide over amnesty caused by W during his second term has been costing Republicans in presidential and other elections since 2006. It was the biggest factor in losing the House and Senate in 2006 and it caused many Republican voters to stay home in 2008 and 2012.

Not hard to understand. The Left/Democrat Socialists do not understand the concept of “a difference of opinion”. There are no “other opinions” in the totalitarian Left’s universe. Critics within are either silenced or destroyed ... sometimes even both.

Not so, Miami Hack Herald.
The GOP is winnowing out the pro-illegal-alien-invader chaff.

Trump exudes confidence to the point of being overwhelming.

It is intoxicating.

I notice now that the media is almost nice to Trump. The reason the debate went so well last night is that Trump raised so much hell in the first 3 debates that they agreed to what he wanted.

This would never ever would have happened if Trump had not screamed.

Even Mika on Morning Joe seems to like Trump now when in the beginning 4 months ago she hated him.

Trump knows how to win people over. He is a powerhouse.

When I saw this headline, I also realized that this issue alone is the single most defining moment in this election and Trump owns it.

Bush and Rubio have gelded themselves by being pro illegal immigration. They are out!

The Left plans to destroy America with 3rd Worlders from the Southern Hemisphere like they are doing in Europe.

Some Idiots on stage last night agree. Americans do no support them.

You got it spot on. All candidates except Jindal and Trump are for amnesty. Cruz is strangely silent on what to do with illegals here, so we can assume that means they get to stay (amnesty, by definition)
