It is very hard to win a case for libel against a public person. It requires proof of "actual malice" or "a casual disregard for veracity."
Carson might have a good case for both.

Kyle Cheney’s own “Not” about his story is full of smoke and mirrors, desperately trying to scale back his original lie, by somehow blaming Carson’s campaign for his original bald faced lie, saying that their statements did not constitute what he originally said they did.
