This undated image was found on social media. Can anyone verify its authenticity? Seems as though the military academy at West Point at least USED the term "scholarship" in its advertising if not in their formal paperwork.

Just by *accusation* .... there’s no smoking gun there. None.

FWIW, I hope that FReepers in kind, don’t post *anything* from the reprobate Politico anymore.

Photoshopped from what?

It looks like those words were highlighted.

So, yeah, they were photoshopped or manipulated to the extent of adding more yellow.

That doesn't mean they were changed from other words.

I don’t know what “fast tracked” means.

I know it seems quite likely that Westmoreland informally offered him a scholarship, for the reasons I outlined earlier. If you think this unlikely, why? Which of my points do you think unlikely?

BTW, I am not a Carson supporter and do not want to see him as the Republican nominee in 2016.

It’s different because it was a highlighted search term from Google. See here:

https://books.google.com/books?id=e14EAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA153&dq=%22west%20point%22%20tuition%20scholarship&pg=PA153#v=onepage&q=%22west%20point%22%20tuition%20scholarship&f=false

Not a Photoshop.

I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t consider all expense paid education at West Point a “full scholarship” and only elitist snobbish small fools would try to make this part of Ben Carson’s bio a scandal. There is no question he was the top ROTC student neither is there any questions about whether he met with General Westmoreland and its completely reasonable that he would be told that he would be guaranteed to get into West Point and even more reasonable that a 17 year old would consider that a “full scholarship”. This kind of thing the media is trying to do to Ben Carson is really low especially given how totally absent this kind of scrutiny was for their Messiah Barack Hussein Obama.

I don’t know what you mean by “informally”.

Carson said he “WAS OFFERED” a scholarship to West Point.
A definitive statement by Carson.
I do not believe this to be true for several reasons.

You would have to believe that Westmoreland said that.
Westmoreland is dead, so no way to confirm or deny.

You would have to believe Westmoreland was willing to give special
treatment to Carson, but not to others. I do not believe Westmoreland
was that type of man.

It is possible that Westmoreland encouraged Carson to apply and that
he may had been able to assist Carson obtain an appointment.

But I do not believe Carson was “offered” an upfront Scholarship to
West Point. That is not how it works.

Well, yes, the original ad probably didn’t have a red box around it either. :)

I am not talking about a photoshop to point out text, I am talking about a photoshop to create a fake ad.

I thought that would be understood.

“Apply and we can get you a scholarship” would be an informal offer. This isn’t that hard, and is likely what happened.

Off topic:

Does the USMA have a branch campus now?
In the standings I see them listed as “Army West Point”
like “UNLV = Nevada Las Vegas,”

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/standings

In years past they were simply “Army.”

Yeppers, West Point lies when they give the offer that cadets will receive full scholarships!

Anyone who has attended a service academy would know how recruitment works as well as the order it occurs (recruitment precedes appointment and application). Although few are recruited each year, there are always some that you know and meet.

Im saying exactly what i posted.

And senior officers very often exert positive influence over the admissions process

West Point spokesperson stated all letters are initiated by Army Adjunct General and records are kept on file of every candidate who is offered acceptance into WP. So, yes this is a record, and Carson still lied.

Well, someone lied, and now we can say it is you. Ben Carson never applied to West Point and never said that he did. So there is no record because there was no application.

Here is the way it works for those that the service academies recruit. Recruitment > Appointment is obtained FOR the student > Student makes application > Acceptance. Since Ben Carson was simply recruited, there is nothing more in the process.

But I am unaware of any Cadet or potential Cader who was ever “offered” an upfront scholarship by West Point, without having to go thru the application and nomination process.

Athletes and academically gifted are often recruited by service academies. The appointment process is guided by the recruiter in those instances - long before there is an application. You obviously don't know many academy people - but don't let your ignorance blind you to facts.

You probably are correct, but we don’t know because we weren’t there. I do think however, affirmative action permeated all parts of society and its doubtful the military was exempted.
