NEW YORK (AP) â Amid high anticipation and sharp criticism, Donald Trump is set to step onstage in Studio 8H tonight to host "Saturday Night Live."
Despite a 40-year history of lampooning politicians while inviting some to mock themselves as on-air guests, booking a presidential candidate to host the NBC sketch-comedy show is almost unprecedented.
Previously, only eight politicians served as guest hosts. Only one of those â the Rev. Al Sharpton, in 2003 â was actively involved in a presidential bid at the time. (Hillary Clinton appeared in last month's season premiere, but not as the host.)
This won't be Trump's first turn as guest host. The billionaire developer and media celebrity presided in April 2004, a few weeks after NBC's "The Apprentice" debuted.
This time, "SNL" will serve as a campaign stop on Trump's drive for the Republican presidential nomination.
Meanwhile, the TV platform granted him has fanned the flames of outrage sparked in June when he announced his candidacy and described some Mexicans who are in the United States illegally as criminals and rapists. Those immigration comments spurred NBC to sever its Miss Universe ties with Trump while declaring he would never return to his "Apprentice" role.

Never watch it...but I will....cuz it’s Trump.
I was telling a friend this AM...he shouldn’t be surprised if the Donald walks off live if it gets out of hand
It is like watching a runaway train. You know it’s gonna crash but you can’t look away.
As much as I hate NBC...I have to see the train.
I probably won’t watch it, because I can’t usually stay up that late. I did sleep in until 8:20, though, so there’s a slight chance.
Trump is very, very smart. Just think what it would cost if he had to buy 60 minutes of prime time air...........
Why does Trump think SNL isn’t going to try to take him down?
I will stay up and watch for the first time in many, many years.
If they disrupt the show, Trump scores big with the SNL crowd. Younger people who've been conditioned to accept out-of-control political correctness will see where it leads.
+++ for Trump and what he's working to achieve.
For the first time in years I’ll actually watch a SNL live broadcast. They stopped being funny to me back in the mid 80s. Must have been part of growing up.
I guess I haven’t grown up yet, I am 75 and I watch every episode of SNL.
They aren’t all hilarious and there are good years and bad years but I like to say “you are only young once but you can be immature forever”!

No matter all the predictions here that Trump is done, has peaked, overstepped again, ..... this says he is still hot property. Very. Even to the liberals, which us amazing. I sense cross-over votes as a result.
I sometimes agree that I don’t get his decisions - but I’m not worth billions so I’m not one to judge. He’s obviously smarter than I am (on some issues, I’ll admit)
All Americans should be watching tonight...the wife and i, certainly will be watching....& we never watch SNL!!! DO IT...WATCH IT....ENJOY IT!!!
I usually don’t stay up that late either. However, I normally fall asleep with the TV on and rarely watch NBC, but just decided I’ll flip to it tonight, so in case I fall asleep, it will be recorded in the total. I may try to take a nap this afternoon as I’d really like to see it (haven’t watched SNL in years).
Same here.
I usually am asleep by 9:00 or 9:30. I can’t believe it. :)
I think your senses are well intact. Trump hopes to gain leftist voters by doing a left-leaning show. That’s why he goes on all the dumb biased shows anyway. You can’t just preach to the choir if you hope to win.
They will have their best audience totals ever.
I may try to take a nap this afternoon

Try?
What’s hard about it? I do it almost every afternoon since I retired 16 years ago. Easiest thing to do ever.
