NEW YORK (AP) â Amid high anticipation and sharp criticism, Donald Trump is set to step onstage in Studio 8H tonight to host "Saturday Night Live."
Despite a 40-year history of lampooning politicians while inviting some to mock themselves as on-air guests, booking a presidential candidate to host the NBC sketch-comedy show is almost unprecedented.
Previously, only eight politicians served as guest hosts. Only one of those â the Rev. Al Sharpton, in 2003 â was actively involved in a presidential bid at the time. (Hillary Clinton appeared in last month's season premiere, but not as the host.)
This won't be Trump's first turn as guest host. The billionaire developer and media celebrity presided in April 2004, a few weeks after NBC's "The Apprentice" debuted.
This time, "SNL" will serve as a campaign stop on Trump's drive for the Republican presidential nomination.
Meanwhile, the TV platform granted him has fanned the flames of outrage sparked in June when he announced his candidacy and described some Mexicans who are in the United States illegally as criminals and rapists. Those immigration comments spurred NBC to sever its Miss Universe ties with Trump while declaring he would never return to his "Apprentice" role.

The best moments will be on Youtube by Sunday morning. I’ll wait.
Never watch it either, but have it set to record tonight while I watch my usual Saturday night show, reruns of “The Closer”, live.
and post some comments for us TV impaired.
Thanks in advance....enjoy the Trump.
Can’t imagine that he had a lot of time this week to rehearse...so there may be some awkward “teleprompter” reading...unless he is good at adlibbing.
Are you nuts?
Trump will never, never, walk off any stage.
He's fast enough on his feet that the worse that could happen is a very awkward moment, and even then I bet he would salvage it.
It's very noticeable when someone is asking a question that he has the answer half devised before the question is over.
I agree ... You know d@mn well Trump is ready for anything that may happen! ... (as is always the case)
And I bet the Associated Press WAS COMPLETELY SILENT about that mixture of entertainment and politics....
Only when a REPUBLICAN is being "boosted" by the entertainment industry will the Associated Press find a reason to whine.
It is, after all, an entertainment show, not a political one. And for sure they know the rating this is drawing. I'm sure they hope that those who rarely watch might becoe regulars, and that doesn't happen if you're an asshole to the host.
I also assume Trump is prepared for nutjobs in the audience. The campaign trail has prepared him for hecklers and disruptions from the ill-bred.
I haven’t watched SNL in forty years when they knocked off my Saturday Night Si-Fi movies off TV. Saw a few bits and pieces but then no more.
I still remember the day. I think it was early 1976. Tulsa Oklahoma, KVOO-KTEW now KJRH! There I sit with my soda and popcorn waiting for some hokey Si-Fi or horror show to come on as it had done for years, when I get...”LIVE FROM NEW YORK, IT’S SATURDAY NIGHT!”
I’m setting there, “Where’s my si-fi movie?” I even waited till SNL was over in hopes of the si-fi show coming on and it did not.
I may have to watch tonight.
Thank God it only a few more hours we will be hearing about this nonsense.
Won’t be watching.
SNL could no more treat Trump like Hillary, then MSNBC could host a fair Republican debate.
or record it, will count as viewer.
Since I live in CA, I will be checking FR at 8:30 tonight to see what the East Coast FReepers have to say about it.
I’m hoping some Illegals in the Audience make a fuss during the show. It would make great TV, but it will probably be edited out by the time the Show hits the West Coast. It would also prove what Trump has been saying all along.
They love Reverend Al over there and he hates Jews. I didn’t recall a bunch of Rabbi’s protesting in the Audience when Reverend Al showed up there.
I wonder if NBC will be Racial Profiling the Audience as they enter the Studio? No Mexicans or Metrosexuals allowed.
Sent him a few more bucks today.
C’mon...Trump has peaked and this is a last ditch effort to rally his failing campaign....Bush has been holding back just waiting for the right time to pounce........../s
“Bush has been holding back just waiting for the right time to pounce........../s”
Oh yeah, forgot that gem! And that Fiorina is set to bypass him... or Carson... somebody, anybody!
Anyone know where SNL can be watched online tonight? I will be away from TV, but I will be online at that time.
Thanks.
