Ben Carson Facebook Post August 13th 2015 (says he was thrilled to get offer from West Point)
Facebook ^

The next question is from Bill. He wanted to know if it was true that I was offered a slot at West Point after high school.

Bill, that is true. I was the highest student ROTC member in Detroit and was thrilled to get an offer from West Point. But I knew medicine is what I wanted to do. So I applied to only one school. (it was all the money I had). I applied to Yale and thank God they accepted me. I often wonder what might have happened had they said no.

You are right about circling wagons. People need to realize that if this works they WILL get around to your candidate with smears sooner or later if they have to go back to first grade, go through the trash, attack family members or random remarks made in casual situations. They are all Tabloids now.

Rush is really hammering Politico on their slander hit piece on Dr. Ben Carson.

....and doing a good job of it. Politico once again proves it cannot be trusted to print the truth. I'm not a Carson supporter, but this is a pathetic attempt to take him out.

I believe your right, but to the larger point why does anyone think it important at all? I don't really think I like Carson much at all as a candidate and will not vote for him in a primary.

Unless they compare his "lies" to Obama's or Hillary's, it dang sure isn't important.

Carson’s Facebook post was in August, 2015, not in first grade. Rather a contemporaneous post by Carson, wouldn’t you say?

Maybe to a college with a Corps of Cadets and an ROTC program, but not to West Point (or the Naval Academy, Air Force, or even the Coast Guard Academy) The entry process for the Service Academies is completely different from that of other colleges and universities.

I'm not saying he would get him in, only stroke him and make the offer.

But honestly? Back then, a bright kid of color WANTING to go to West Point? Yeah, I could see him getting him in.

“I applied to only one school. (it was all the money I had). I applied to Yale and thank God they accepted me.”

Dr. Carson never said he applied to West Point. He said he was told by his ROTC commander that if he applied he would receive an appointment.

Dr. Carson was a good student with good grades and a good record with the Junior ROTC.

It is almost certain that had he applied he would have received an appointment.

I guess I will start worrying about this “lie” the day that Hillary is forced to quit over her lie about being under fire in Bosnia.

Carson did not write in Gifted Hands that he was accepted to West Point.

I actually WAS appointed to West Point by my congressman in 1975 and ended up declining and taking a 4-year ROTC scholarship to a major university instead. The formal application process was detailed and arduous.

Having said that, I don’t see the inconsistency in what Ben Carson said (and BTW he’s not my candidate for president). His story is that a 4-star general said something to the effect that he could get him into West Point, which Westmoreland probably COULD indeed have done with a phone call. But irrespective of the details, an 18-year old kid took it to the bank as gospel and that’s the way Carson will remember it the rest of his life.

So I think Carson is sincere in what he believes happened. Whether it was just recruitment bullshit, who really knows.

Why isn’t Politico digging into what Hillary did as a lawyer or Secretary of State???

it seems Carson should know it’s the Medal Of Honor and one doesn’t “win” it.

If he wrote what it says he wrote, then he pretty much deserves to be toast. I like Carson, but when he decided to become politically active he should have known that he couldn’t fabricate an appointment to West Point. Too many people know it doesn’t work like that. As far as I know the only person who can circumvent the appointment process is the football coach. And POTUS.

It is, however, highly likely that a squared-away JROTC leader might be encouraged to apply and possibly offered a letter of recommendation. As a minority kid from the ghetto, even more so.

He said he got a “slot” which is synonymous with appointment. How can you defend his lies?

True, but it's all they have. The witch hunt is on.

Too bad Ben Carson did not say and write in his book, “General Westmoreland told me he could get me into West Point if I wanted to apply” That was the truth. Instead Ben embellished and parsed words to make it seem like he actually received an admission to West Point which he did not. And over time he allowed people to believe something that is not true.

If he did then why did you not give a link to what you think Dr.Ben Carson said. Is it cause you want to believe a Lie? If you’re really in the military you would know presentation for recruitment is not giving HS student information to discern the difference between a process or an offer to attend West point. The end of the process though is a scholarship to West point.

And at that time the military was actively trying to get more blacks into the services. West Point had a “goal” of 10% of new candidates being black.

This reminds me of the relentless attacks mounted against ‘she who must not be disrobed’ for demonstrably lying about taking sniper fire in Bosnia.
