The student who stabbed four people on the campus of UC Merced was identified Thursday as 18-year-old Faisal Mohammad from Santa Clara, Calif., the university confirms to Fox News.
"He had a smile on his face, he was having fun," a construction worker who helped stop the attack told CBS 47.
Campus police shot and killed Mohammad, a freshman computer science & engineering major, after Wednesday's attack. Police detonated his backpack and are testing a substance inside, KGO reports.
The four victims are expected to survive.
Authorities are investigating a motive.

Police reveal he had a backpack containing highly flammable petroleum jelly, ziptie handcuffs, night vision goggles, duct tape and a hammer in his backpack when he was shot in the back by cops....He used a 10-inch hunting knife to stab two students, a campus construction worker and a female teacher ......described as antisocial by his roommate, was supposedly 'having fun' as he lunged at his classmates with a hunting knife before construction worker Byron Price (right) thwarted the attack and was one of those left injured, inset.

The UC Merced student who stabbed four people during a campus rampage intended to kill a lot of people, according to authorities who found a detailed manifesto on his body.
Merced County Sheriff Verne Warnke told the Sun-Star Thursday that the document found on the body of 18-year-old Faisal Mohammad included a detailed list of his targets and his intentions.
The computer science and engineering freshman planned to stab a police officer, take that officers firearm and use it to shoot students in a dormitory, Warnke said.
Mohammad motive appears to have been anger he felt over being kicked out of a study group,†Warnke said. He was mad at a student.
UC officials and investigators have discounted any possible political or religious motivations behind the attack, which wounded two students and two others early Wednesday.
UC Merced Chancellor Dorthy Leland said there was no evidence to believe the attack was in any way related to terrorism.
