NBC/WSJ Poll: Carson Surges Into Lead of National GOP Race

Ben Carson has surged into the lead of the Republican presidential race, getting support from 29 percent of GOP primary voters, according to a brand-new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

That's the highest percentage any GOP candidate has obtained so far in the survey.

Carson's 29 percent is followed by Donald Trump at 23 percent, Marco Rubio at 11 percent, Ted Cruz at 10 percent and Jeb Bush at 8 percent. These findings are similar to a New York Times/CBS poll released last week, which also showed Carson in first place in the national GOP contest.

That is a favorite comment of a number of posters every time Ben is considered to be a threat. I have seen it dozens of times. My dad is going to vote for him as well as a neighbor down the street and by sheer coincidence, I know a guy who went to John Hopkins Medical School at the same time as Ben. He loves Ben - thought he was special then and thinks he is special now. Obviously, he is going to vote for him.

Your turn.

I know without asking that you are a Trump supporter. I have discovered most of Trump’s supporters approximate your intellectual level.

ditto...

All I ever hear from anyone that actually knows who he is, “he seems like a nice guy”. That’s it.

If Trump were to drop out Carson still would not win the first state outside Iowa. Trump’s support would go to Cruz.

The MSM is getting desperate. They wanted the GOP to nominate the weakes candidate, so they tried to prop up Jeb! but he failed. Then they tried Kasich. He fizzeled out. Then they tried Fiorina, and she went nowhere. Now things are so bad that they will now take even Carson over Trump or Cruz.

No one on this site has the aptitude to understand much of anything. Carson has run millions of dollars of ads in Iowa and Trump has run zero. Do you kinda, mighta, thinka that maybe that is why Ben has traction in every poll.

Ads do seem to work and fwiw, people get their "news" from ads. Seems like Trump should start running some ads, but it seems like he is hedging his bets - kinda doesn't want to put his money where his mouth is. I read that his biggest expenditure to date is T-shirts and bumper stickers...

You're a liar, since we've butted heads before! You just wanted to be nasty.

Carson is a heck of a lot better than all of the Democrats and most all of the Republicans. He may not be a champion at debate or policy, but I do not believe a man like Carson would be a bad choice, but he’s not the best choice, either.

I could vote for Carson, but I’d rather vote Trump or Cruz. There’s a possibility that Jindal could be a decent choice, as well.

The people I know leaning toward Carson are good people with a belief that a true man of God displays it consistently and shows great growth from the kind of man one once was.

I give you much much credit. I think you are the only honest poster I have run across in months and months. Every supporter is hyper defensive about their candidate and hyper nasty about the other candidates. Truth matters little around here. Hear and see no evil is alive and well around here.

I love Cruz and think he is amazing, but I agree with you 100%. Not only know it all, but also arrogant. Now, I don't think he is arrogant in reality, but sometimes that is how I perceive him when I listen to him. He kind of addressed it during the debate when he said that he is not one you want to have a beer with, but he would bring you safely home. So he is self aware in that regard, which is good. He can't change who he is, but if he could be a bit more conversational and not seem to be lecturing, he would be perfect.

It is a known truth that voters will not vote for you if they don't like you. I have talked to a number of pubbies who just don't like him, but I think he can overcome that. The more they see him and listen to him, I think they will be comfortable with him. Anyway, I appreciate your ability to look at your choice honestly.

Yeah the bulk of his support would likely go to Cruz if Trump dropped out.

Solid empirical evidence that Trump takes Iowa. For example in Trump’s Burlington, IA rally, he had about 3,000 supporters who showed up for Trump’s rally that filled the biggest venue in Des Moines county. Santorum won that same county with only 388 caucus goers. I’d bet Trump gets well over 1,000 supporters who went to his rally. Trump is going to get 3 to 5 times more voters for him than Santorum in that moderately populated county located in South East, Iowa. Start multiplying that over the many IA counties and you’ll get the picture.

Another tidbit that Trump has a big advantage over his rivals in IA. Trump has his very own Air Force.

He has 3 helicopter and 2 jets. In the run up to the Iowa caucus, Trump will be crisscrossing the entire state of Iowa from one end to the other literally running rings around his opponents. Trump is going to win Iowa walking away.

He would be awful. Carson can't win the general. He is a pacifist who even declared that we shouldn't have gone after the Taliban after 911, instead saying the US should have pursued "energy independence". He is pathetic on amnesty. Has sided with the race baiters. He can't be taken seriously on any matters of substance, such as trade, TPP, or economics. The list goes on.

The people I know leaning toward Carson are good people with a belief that a true man of God displays it consistently and shows great growth from the kind of man one once was.

They are dumb dumbs I stopped taking seriously after the Rick Santorum fiasco, in all honesty, even though I know that will offend many. Their idea of a "true man of God" is skin deep. The church in America is in a horrible condition.

LOL, thank you sir. I feel like it’s really dated and most people won’t “get it.” Then again, like a weed you can’t get rid of, there’s Hillary. I have no idea where Craig is, or if he’s shuffled off this mortal coil...

Well, whose fault is that? Is it not the other candidates job to inform and contrast their positions with Ben. Why aren’t they doing that?

I don’t agree with it. I never said I was a Carson supporter, but don’t see the need to trash him and make fun of his supporters and pretend all polls are a fake.

All I ever hear from anyone that actually knows who he is, "he seems like a nice guy". That's it.

I have met and chatted with him occasionally since 1997 or 98, have met his wife, mother and children, and have read a couple of his books; and one of his sons is friends with a relative of mine. He is not creepy. None of them are creepy. They are very nice folks, and he has been drafted and funded by people who do find his courage in confronting Obama and the many social ills of this country squarely, as well as his frequent defenses of the constitutional republican system.

He is very intelligent; and very intelligent people are often accused of being "weird" by average people. I've seen that from childhood on with the several PhD's or MD's in my own family. That's the only reason (other than favoring another candidate) that I can think of for freepers to insult someone who is likely to be part of the next Republican administration by appointment. Defaming him is insulting to either Trump, Cruz or Rubio who will most likely offer him a top spot in HHS or similar.

That said, he is not my preferred candidate because he is still green on some issues, but if he were nominated, there is no chance in hell that I would throw my vote to Hillary or Bernie by abstaining.
