ATLANTA (NBC) - One year out from the presidential general election and four months to Super Tuesday, Georgia voters are leaning towards Donald Trump as their candidate of choice.
In an exclusive scientific poll commissioned by 11Alive News and conducted by SurveyUSA, Donald Trump would win the Republican primary with 35% of the vote. Ben Carson is his closest competitor with 28% of likely Republican voters. Marco Rubio pulled in 12%. Five other Republican candidates were in the single digits.
When likely Republican voters were asked what they would do if Trump does win the Republican nomination, 74% said they would definitely vote for him, 7% said they'd definitely vote for a third party instead, 2% said they'd cross party lines and vote Democratic, 18% said it was too soon to decide.
The exclusive 11Alive News poll was conducted in the days leading up to last week's Republican debate.
Republican strategist Brian Robinson sees Trump and Carson as insurgent candidates whose momentum will likely fizzle out."I would certainly feel good if I was in the Carson or Trump camps, but number three was Marco Rubio, and I think he is probably sitting in the catbird seat," he said.
The 11Alive News poll shows Trump leads by 11 points with moderates. He also leads by 20 points among the least educated and least affluent voters. Trump and Carson are tied among the most educated voters. The most affluent give Carson a three-point lead.

Georgians gave us Jimmah Cahtah so why should I care?
WOOHOO GO TRUMP GO!!!
I hope Cruz comes out before the party’s over.
Wait ‘til “Club for Growth” gets in there against Trump. The Growth they like is a North American Union, by way of illegals and AMNESTY for al of them. And, TPP.
The Club prefers Rubio and Cruz. These two will play ball with the Club, CoC, Wall Street and K Street.
Trump breaks the china and won’t play, so he is in the way. He will kill AMNESTY and cause TPP a LOT of trouble until he takes it out entirely.
Trump should start running ads against the Club for Growth, pointing out that they are pro-amnesty.
Billy Beer and Killer Rabbits! Oh My!
Great pic...
Jimmy was a product of Georgia but was not well loved down here....Georgia also gave you Newt and his time as speaker was considered by most on this forum pretty good, not perfect, but better than almost every other speaker we have had...
Texas gave us Baby Bush....
Florida gave us JEB...
Mass gave us Romney.....
Etc......
You should care....The way Georgia votes so does most of the South.....
Illinois/Hawaii(??) - Baraq Hussein 0bama, Hillary Rodham Clinton (aka Madam Benghazi)
ArKansas - Bubba Clinton, Hillary Rodham Clinton (aka Madam Benghazi - there's more than enough evil to poison multiple states!)
IIRC, Georgia is winner-take-all, right?
I am surprised that Cruz is not doing better in a state like Georgia. Trump has had a lot of good news this morning. Go Trump/ Cruz
I’m a Trump supporter, but to be fair this poll was taken before the most recent debate.
Outside of Reagan....every state owes us an apology for all politicians for the past 40 years.....both Demoncrats and Republicrats....
You bring a good point. I’m thinking Trump will do just that, but he will want to do it through taking on the candidates, directly, who have their hand out to the Club funding their campaigns.
If the candidates did not have their hand out, there would be no influence peddling for the Club for Growth to accomplish. I mean, the Club is not running for president, but they are trying to pick off those among our field who can be bought off.
They are a PAC and Trump has fairly well attacked ALL PACS for owning the candidates who use them.
I know it is called “free speech”, but the egalitarian purchase of our government has been the result, and it is a disaster. This is the fault of that Citizens United bill that was passed. We are learning that it’s just not working out as well as it sounded.
Looks good for trump and the ladies...blacks too in the primary.
