Teacher's answer to Common Core math problem has parents steaming
sheknows ^ | 10/27/2015 | Christine McDow

A new trend in math at elementary schools around the country has parents pulling out their hair. Mainly because it is the opposite of how most of today's adults were taught to do simple multiplication in the first place.

According to a Common Core math worksheet that's gone viral, an elementary child today cannot just say, "5 x 3 = 15." Instead they have to change the multiplication problem to addition before solving the equation. However, if the child says, "5 + 5 + 5 = 15," they will still lose points because the problem must be written as it is stated. In this case, "five times three" is really stated as "five groups of three," and has to be written as such: "3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15."

This concept has left many parents shaking their heads and throwing their hands up in despair because they can't figure out what it is that their child is supposed to do. Why do you have to add instead of multiply, and why do you have to add the second number five times instead of the first number three times? The biggest question is: "Does it even matter?"

Isn’t that an example of, of, that holy concept known as Diversity which is shoved down the kids throats?

The set of all groups grouped together is groupspeak gobbledygook. New math plus common core. Ahh, ain’t the new power packed pedagogy pretentiously pathetic?

What exactly is the philosophy? It seems that students are being taught that memorizing tables for arithmetic is wrong, and that we should prefer to draw the items then count them. I assume they are allowed to move their lips while they count if that will help.

I am teaching my children multiplication tables. You can get flash cards at Barnes and Noble among other places.

I am also teaching them history, art, music, literature, science, athletics, martial arts, self-discipline, the value of education, and MY religion, philosophy, and world view--i.e. I am teaching them the truth as well as I can know it.

The Leftists might succeed in destroying the world and forcing our children to live in a hell hole, but I will have my children as prepared for it as I possibly can. NOTHING is more important. I trust that you will do the same.

So 5x3=15 has a different answer than 3x5=15?

It’s been proven that a child’s brain development is harmed by not learning math at an early age. So why would we change the way it’s been taught for hundreds of years? Unless that is their plan.

Multiplication is commutative. 5 x 3 = 3 x 5. The people coming up with those rules are idiots and should not be let anywhere near a school or children.

Check out commoncoresheets.com. Or preferably don’t. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

They want to make it difficult for common peoples’ kids, but I guarantee you that the elites’ kids going to private schools are getting the easy old-fashioned methods used to make them the future rulers of the nation and subsequently the world..................

It isn't just the opposite of how most of today's adults were taught, it is the blatant absurdity of Common Core's method (?) to dumb down America's young. Parents should put a hold on their School Board Members' salaries until Common Core is dropped from their schools curriculum...YES THEY CAN! By the way most School Boards answer to no one...they are pretty much free agents...they are elected and they are paid well.

So, how do you do 4.23 x 6.57?

For that we'll need a mainframe.

"skip counting" on fingers and then gradually removing the counting it out step is a great way to very quickly teach a class their multiplication tables. If you're skip counting 5 x 3 uses the first number, 5, and counts 5,10,15. The competitive nature of youngsters has them wanting to know their times tables so they don't have to use their fingers anymore!

This CC method is wrong on so many levels. One is that it reverses the order normal people read in, left to right. Another is that it dwells on the step you want left out. The "skip count" step never should be on paper! That was taken care of in earlier lessons where they learned multiples.

It's sad, really sad. A generation of us Math teachers fought "modern math", defied the authorities, and many of us taught traditional math. Now it seems almost every one who's teaching does it like they're told to, even when they know it's wrong.
