~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Happy 240th Birthday United States Navy!

From everyday small feats to undeniably heroic efforts, the accomplishments and achievements of America’s Navy are vast and significant.

Since its birth on October 13, 1775, the Navy has been involved with more than ten major wars and countless battles in the effort to bring security, democracy and prosperity to the American people and to the international community.

The history of the United States Navy divides into two major periods: the "Old Navy", a small but respected force of sailing ships that was also notable for innovation in the use of ironclads during the American Civil War, and the "New Navy", the result of a modernization effort that began in the 1880s and made it the largest in the world by the 1920s.

The United States Navy recognizes October 13, 1775 as the date of its official establishment, when the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution creating the Continental Navy. With the end of the American Revolutionary War, the Continental Navy was disbanded. Under President John Adams threats to American merchant shipping by pirates in the Mediterranean led to the Naval Act of 1794, which created a permanent standing U.S. Navy.

The ships of the Navy participated in a number of conflicts after the end of the Cold War. After diplomatic efforts failed, the Navy was instrumental in the opening phases of the 1991 Gulf War with Iraq; the ships of the navy launched hundreds of Tomahawk II cruise missiles and naval aircraft flew sorties from six carriers in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea. The battleships Missouri and Wisconsin fired their 16-inch guns for the first time since the Korean war on several targets in Kuwait.

Currently comprised of more than 326,054 personnel, today's Navy is equipped to handle operations both on and under the sea, in the air and on the ground. Its reach is worldwide, spanning 100 international ports and touching the farthest corners of the open ocean. Elite groups within the Navy, such as the SEALs and Navy Divers, receive specialized training for advanced warfare situations.

I hope she’ll be more careful, but, as I well know...we can’t be sure of those sweet old ladies!

I got the Medical Alert after her first fall, and told her NEVER to take it off...it is the pendant around her neck. She's been really good about always wearing it. It is bath/shower proof.

We had a good test today, with a good outcome. So...onward!

Hope your MIL heard you well.

I hope she listened, too. When we were up there 2 weeks ago, I noticed that she had it on. I think these accidents she’s had might have made a believer out of her. I can only hope.

Hope your mom wasn’t too banged up by her fall! Darn old hard floors anyway!

Actually it took a long time for the Navy to go dry. The rum ration was ended in 1862, by SecNav Gideon Wells. Beer and wine for sailors was ended in 1899 by SecNav John Long.
All alcohol was forbidden by SecNav Josephus Daniels July 1, 1941.

A Happy Birthday to MY Navy. I’ve spent the last 37 years serving MY Navy. 20 years active, 12 years as a contractor, the last 5 as a government employee. Working to keep the fleet ready for sea.

GO NAVY!

Hi Kathy!

Mom MUST be doing better, because she is “out of her room” every time i call.

That’s good news. Means she is in rehab or activities.

Or talking someone’s ear off at the nurses station! LOL!

The rain has stopped...for now. :-)

Howdy, EGC! (((hugs)))

All is well here. Nice clear cool morning, but will be much too warm this afternoon for mid-October. The 80s should have been left in September already!

Hope you and Bo are getting out more now that you have your truck up and running again!

We did have a great time out at the lake yesterday. The pickup is up and running, although it still takes 2 turns of the key on the first start and one key the remaining trips. We'll just have to see how things go with it.

I'm expecting a visit this morning from someone from Pioneer Telephone. They're going to install a new set top box on the TV in my bedroom later this morning.

My brother and his family are coming up from Oklahoma later this week and their TV habits are different from mine so this new TV will accommodate both of us.
