~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Happy 240th Birthday United States Navy!

From everyday small feats to undeniably heroic efforts, the accomplishments and achievements of America’s Navy are vast and significant.

Since its birth on October 13, 1775, the Navy has been involved with more than ten major wars and countless battles in the effort to bring security, democracy and prosperity to the American people and to the international community.

The history of the United States Navy divides into two major periods: the "Old Navy", a small but respected force of sailing ships that was also notable for innovation in the use of ironclads during the American Civil War, and the "New Navy", the result of a modernization effort that began in the 1880s and made it the largest in the world by the 1920s.

The United States Navy recognizes October 13, 1775 as the date of its official establishment, when the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution creating the Continental Navy. With the end of the American Revolutionary War, the Continental Navy was disbanded. Under President John Adams threats to American merchant shipping by pirates in the Mediterranean led to the Naval Act of 1794, which created a permanent standing U.S. Navy.

The ships of the Navy participated in a number of conflicts after the end of the Cold War. After diplomatic efforts failed, the Navy was instrumental in the opening phases of the 1991 Gulf War with Iraq; the ships of the navy launched hundreds of Tomahawk II cruise missiles and naval aircraft flew sorties from six carriers in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea. The battleships Missouri and Wisconsin fired their 16-inch guns for the first time since the Korean war on several targets in Kuwait.

Currently comprised of more than 326,054 personnel, today's Navy is equipped to handle operations both on and under the sea, in the air and on the ground. Its reach is worldwide, spanning 100 international ports and touching the farthest corners of the open ocean. Elite groups within the Navy, such as the SEALs and Navy Divers, receive specialized training for advanced warfare situations.

Oh, my goodness! I’m so glad she had that and that they were on the ball. My MIL has one, too, and once it worked only too well.

They did a well-being call to her one Sunday afternoon, and when they couldn’t rouse her, they called the fire dept and police and they came over and broke into the house and thoroughly scoured the neighborhood, scaring all her friends who live around her.

They called us nearly immediately...and of course, being 7 1/2 hours away, we told them to do whatever they needed.

We called our son to see if he’d go over there.

Weeeeelllllll....she was WITH THEM!! Having lunch and a good ol’ time! She had left the medical alert on her car seat when she got home from church and just walked out and got in our son’s car and off they went.

We were so relieved and SO FURIOUS! We sort of had to chastise her and tell her to NEVER take the thing off when she was near or in her house. LOL!

I’m so glad your mom was ok, even though was on the floor and probably so sore and scared. I hope she’ll be more careful, but, as I well know...we can’t be sure of those sweet old ladies!

When I was a kid in the 50s and 60s the Navy had a recruitment office in the local Post Office building in DeFuniak Springs.

There would always be a rack holding free literature. The only one I wanted was Navy comic books. They were really good and also were good history.

One comic told the story of 3 U.S. Navy ships capturing a ship carrying rum. All three ships helped themselves and before long all their crews were drunk.

During this time they spotted a small British warship and attacked. The little British ship whipped all 3 American ships. From that time until I think fairly recently, alcohol was banned from U.S. warships.

Hai. On the road again, or in my case in the air again. Won’t be home until this Saturday. Doing Atlanta to Miami to Ft. Walton Beach ( no time for beach) back to Chicago then Seattle.
