Amid Russian airstrikes, a Putin craze takes hold in Mideast

BEIRUT (AP) -- Amid the ornate walls of Damascus' famed Omayyad Mosque, preacher Maamoun Rahmeh stood before worshippers last week, declaring Russian President Vladimir Putin a "giant and beloved leader" who has "destroyed the myth of the self-aggrandizing America."
Posters of Putin are popping up on cars and billboards elsewhere in parts of Syria and Iraq, praising the Russian military intervention in Syria as one that will redress the balance of power in the region.
The Russian leader is winning accolades from many in Iraq and Syria, who see Russian airstrikes in Syria as a turning point after more than a year of largely ineffectual efforts by the U.S.-led coalition to dislodge the Islamic State militants who have occupied significant parts of the two countries.
The reactions underscore that while the West may criticize Putin for supporting Syrian President Bashar Assad, there is some relief in the region at the emergence of a player with a coherent - if controversial - strategy.
"Putin does more than just speak," said Sohban Elewi of Damascus, summing up the views of Syrians on opposing camps who regard U.S. policy in Syria and Iraq as fumbled and confused.

truth
In the USA being gay is a sign of “strength” under Obama and shows “courage” to be out. In the rest of the world the opposite. I know crazy, right?
So add one to the Obama is stupid column, leave the Obama is evil column as is.
Not only crazy, but stupid as well.
Not just the middle east. In Europe and Israel they are living Putin while saying Obama is a big sissy with no leadership.
Course that fact will still be lost with the liberals , because they just cannot face facts and how they were wrong.
I honestly do not think the fairy in chief wanted ISIS to be taken out and instead we have been bombing Assad forces, thus helping other terrorists.
If that is true and I think it is then we have yet another war started with another sovereign country un this fairy.
To this pansy with no clue leadership is about global warming.
I am glad to see the Muslims welcoming Putin and his Cossack army, who have been killing Muslims for centuries.
Ironic.
Gog and Magog taking a selfie, hello world.
I don’t see how you can say Trump has no chance but think Cruz does. The GOPe will try to torpedo either one, but Trump has the resources and leadership ability to overcome it. Cruz doesn’t. If somehow he did get the nomination he would be undermined by the RNC because they know their jobs are at stake. Then they could blame his “extreme” positions for the loss, while using a Democrat president to keep conservatives voting for Republicans.
Ha! The only reason Putin is rattling the ISIS cage is that they are trying to unseat Assad. If they were not in the way of protecting Assad, he would not care. Insofar as Iraq is concerned, Putin will align himself with his other ally in the region, Iran. So what Iran wants, needs, Putin will support.. The only regional power (we no longer count) that could upset the apple cart is the Saudis, and thus he strokes their fur to make sure they don't get involved..That mix would be far too volatile.
Titus, the Muslims in Lebanon are not the only people suddenly in love with Putin.
and I don’t think this forum is half Muslim.
Just a observation...
As would trump....and that undermining would occur bigtime at the Convention assuming they fail before then.
They would try, but Trump could win without them. Cruz can’t.
Actually, you cannot get nominated with some support or acquiescence from the party.
I suppose we will see, the Convention is quite a jump from here. Most of the candidate jockeying occurs when the primaries begin.
But I don’t see where Trump has any more political support from the party right now, then Cruz has.
The GOP set up the primaries in many places to be winner take all and/or open, thinking that would favor the supposed “moderate” GOPe candidate. What they didn’t count on is someone like Trump, who has appeal to independents and even some Dems as well as conservatives, and is now the frontrunner with a plurality. I think it’s entirely possible Trump will have an outright majority of delegates by the time the convention rolls around.
You will not find independents and democrats as GOP delegates.
You mixing the general election with the nomination process.
No, but in open primaries they will help select the GOP delegates.
Some states don’t even have public votes..Delagates in the ones that do are not necessarily required to support the voting results. Some do have rules, but rules are subject to change.
The primary is not the same in every state, does not necessarily have any legal or constitutional mandates...it’s more or less just a prelim to the main event.
In the past we have had floor fights that have lasted quite a while.
I don’t know what is going to happen. I suspect that the GOP will try to push their candidate to the podium regardless of any votes in the individual states.
Like I said, they have to either acquiesce or concur as a group for a nominee from anywhere to be given the mantle and his/her electors.
In the general, you then vote for the Electors, and not the person.
There has not been one of these outsider candidates that made it to the convention in quit some time. Perot never made it but he came close.
Frankly, at this time during the last open primary with no incumbent, Rudy Giuliani was going to be the next POTUS.
We have a way to go yet..
