Jerry Parr, Secret Service Agent Who Helped Save Reagan, Dies at 85

Jerry S. Parr, the Secret Service agent credited with saving President Ronald Reagan’s life during an assassination attempt in 1981, died Friday at a hospice near his home in Washington. He was 85.

The death was confirmed by Mr. Parr’s wife, Carolyn, who said he died of congestive heart failure.

Mr. Parr was just feet away from Mr. Reagan when John W. Hinckley Jr. opened fire on the president outside the Washington Hilton hotel on March 30, 1981.

“When he was about probably six or seven feet from the car, I heard these shots,” Mr. Parr said in a 2013 interview promoting the memoir he wrote with his wife. “I sort of knew what they were, and I’d been waiting for them all of my career, in a way. That’s what every agent waits for, is that.”

I recently visited the Reagan Library and Museum, where I learned that the bullet that hit the President had ricocheted off the car. So, in a way, it’s strange to consider that pushing him into the car as they did is what put him in the line of fire. Just one of those odd coincidences.

RIP Mr. Parr now what a joy to see you have been reunited with President Reagan, however this time there is no need for protection. Both are now eternal friends. =)

If I remember right, Reagan was angry with this guy because he thought he was responsible for the pain he was feeling, thinking he was injured being pushed into the limo. It was actually the wound from the bullet that was causing discomfort.

The car that Reagan was pushed into on that day is at the Henry Ford museum in Detroit.

The sign on the rope said "Do Not Touch" but I leaned forward and touched it anyways.

When Mr. Reagan awoke the morning after the assassination attempt, The Associated Press reported in 1981, one of his first requests was to speak to Mr. Parr. Donald T. Regan, the Treasury secretary at the time, told The A.P. that the president wanted to apologize to Mr. Parr because, not immediately realizing that he had been shot, he first thought his chest pains had been caused by Mr. Parr’s shove.

The idea is to get the principal away from the threat as fast as possible to end any additional threat to the principle. They train to do just that. And they’ll do what ever it takes to accomplish that. 1st priority is to quickly put distance between the threat. The limo is a rolling fortress or moving safe house. Ya never know if there are going to be multiple assailants etc.

Very nicely said.

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
~John 15:13

Mr. Parr was ready to do just that (as were the other agents that day), there should be some sort of memorial for them all in my opinion, the Lord be with his family, Rest in Peace Sir.
