A roughly 2,000-mile fence on the Mexican border would cost tens of billions.
If Donald Trump were to build a wall along the United States' southern border, it would cost billions.
The U.S. border with Mexico is roughly 2,000 miles long and underlines four states from California to Texas. It is a massive stretch of land the Berlin Wall spanned just 96 miles comparatively, and it cost about $25 million to build in 1961, or around $200 million with inflation.
Building a wall to keep out illegal immigrants is not a novel plan. About 670 miles of fencing on the U.S.-Mexico border was completed in accordance with the Bush administration's Secure Fence Act of 2006. That alone cost about $2.4 billion, for roughly one-third of the entire border and, according to migration experts, some of the easier and less costly areas to fence.
The Secure Fence Act called for 700 miles of fencing, with a double layer throughout, but much of the barrier isn't reinforced this way. Even before the fence reached its first stage of completion, some argued it was not being constructed properly....

Facts are such...messy...things for CNBC.
Yes. Now, let’s switch to GOP Establishment crimes:
Well, it’s only multiple-level crime, such as identity theft, murder, forged papers, Americans unable to find jobs in many places, health centers closing near the border because they’re forced to provide services for illegal aliens, etc.
Gad, what a mess.
Bush/Rubio 2016. Because the Cheap Labor Express demands your allegiance. $75 guacamole bowl, anyone? Jeb Bush has one for you at his website.
Tens of billions? How many trillions is Obama spending on free stuff for illegal aliens?
“Israel built theirs for 1.5 million per mile, and it works.”
Hire the Israelis. $3 billion well spent.
Obamacare cost over a trillion dollars and no one even thought we didn’t have the money.
Why should the wall be an issue?
Plus this idiot writing about the wall has no idea how to build anything.
We just spent about 10 TRILLION in the past 7 years paying lazy people to sit around and drink booze and smoke dope all day. Build the damn wall, I don’t care if its another trillion dollars!
People tend to inflate the cost because they don’t want to close the border. This thing would not cost much more than a 4 lane freeway of the same length. Turned on its side of course....
“Whats the cost if we dont build it? Hundreds of billions.”
Jim, is we spend that much in direct costs per year for welfare, ebt, wic and other giveaways.
The semi obvious costs of schooling the illegals and providing healthcare will be in the billions, in California.
The hidden costs the legal damages due to drunk illegals driving and causing severe car accidents makes the left wing lawyers rich defending them.
The hidden costs of criminal illegals re pre trial costs, trial costs and post trial costs. Again a gold mine for left wing lawyers.
Then, add the costs of the various social agencies spending our tax $’s for whatever reasons trying to bring illegals into the mainstream. Of course that seldom works, the left wingers need more of our tax $’s each year.
Remember when they were selling NAFTA?
They the Mexicans would stay home once they had jobs.
The left is predictable, they will always make false arguments and spin truth and lie when they feel they must.
It cost many more billions, assumeing they are not lying even now, to pay for illegal aliens food and shelter and clothing and medicine and schooling. Yet the leftists never consider that working Americans are being shorted more and more with every illegal crossing the border and living off of taxpayers.
Liberals worried about the US government spending money on the perfect quintessential “shove ready” project. That is rich.
Just curious as to how much the Democrats “shovel ready jobs”, of which this would be that never transpired would have cost the U.S. taxpayer?
Seems we hear about the costs only when it’s a Republican proposal. Republican spending bad. Democrat spending good.
Build the damn wall.
Exactly! Not building it will cost many hundreds of billions more.
“What if we hire welfare receivers to build it?”
Why hire anyone at all in a normal sense?
When someone is an illegal give them a trial and a sentence of 3 years building the wall. They’d get humane treatment, 3 hots and a cot as well as all the Gatorade they needed. This would, in a very real sense make Mexico pay for the wall as it would Mexicans laboring. Street gangs are other good conscripts for these chain gangs. It would reduce the need for prison space, teach them a usable skill and frighten off others from coming.
I’d also offer a grace period for any illegal in the US to voluntarily turn themselves in for deportation and avoid the sentence.
I’d man the the wall be removing the 30,000 US troops from the Korean border. The South Koreans are a top 5 world economy and should be able to defend themselves from North Korea all by themselves.
Lastly this article is lie-beral hyperbole The wall does not have to be built along the whole border just at those areas near crossing points. Thus extending walls and fences another 200 miles might be good enough to really reduce the cross border traffic.
The idea that statists and clients of the state care about the cost to the taxpayer of anything government buys is laughable.
The wall is a one time purchase... Illegal invasion is a never-ending drain on resources.
Money well spent. We can just transfer some money from the Department Of Education, Planned parenthood, the IRS, and the EPA by executive order ;)
Everything about this country that's better than where the came from. They will keep coming and keep coming until you can't tell the difference between here and the rathole they came from. They'll only stop coming when it's just not worth the trip any more.
That was certainly a fat chance! Nevah happened. LOL
That giant sucking sound DID happen.
But the Federal government is almost always terrible at cost avoidance (i.e avoid the liabilities of allowing millions of low-skill people into the US)
I don't care what the wall costs. It's worth it.
