Donald Trump will not be the Republican nominee for president, Ted Cruz said Thursday, claiming that a majority of the Manhattan real-estate mogul's supporters would end up voting for him instead.
Cruz was asked whether he believed he could beat Trump based on his principles, in an interview with WABC's Rita Cosby that will air on Sunday. "I think that's right. I think in time I don't believe Donald is going to be the nominee and I think in time the lions share of his supporters end up with us," the freshman senator predicted. "And I think the reason is what I was just saying, that if you look to the records of all the Republican candidates there's a big difference between my record and that of everyone else if you ask, who has stood up to Washington?
He continued: "Who's taken on not just Democrats, but taken on leaders in their own party? Republican leadership, whether was leading the fight to stop Obamacare? Whether it was leading the fight to stop executive amnesty? Or actually, just going back to last week. You know at the last Republican debate in California, every Republican candidate stood up there and said, 'we need to defund Planned Parenthood.' But last week, when we had an epic drag down fight in Washington, not one of them showed up."
Cruz, who has declined to criticize Trump, unlike some of his GOP presidential rivals, reiterated that he is "glad" he is in the race and that his candidacy has reflected favorably on his own positions.

Cruz feels (with some justification) that when Trump goes away that the Trump voters will become Cruz voters. So he wants Trump to go away as soon as possible.
Candidates always say they will win and the other guy will lose. It’s meaningless (except when it comes to fundraising).
It's been pretty clear that A: Cruz and Trump both have the same causes in many cases...illegal immigration, the GOP establishment, political correctness, etc. B: It's been clear that over all, Cruz is far more reliably conservative. And C: It's also been clear, as Trump has stayed so strong for so long, that at some point Cruz would need point B to be exposed for more discussion.
So - is this Cruz trying to start that peeling back process? Maybe bouncing off Trump's comments on Kelo?
Well it was a bit risky, and so far, Cruz' campaign has been anything but risky. Time will tell whether it was or not, but it's a fair question. The brilliance in what Cruz said specifically is that DT can't really dispute the main thesis...which is that the biggest divide in the nation today is that between Washington and the rest of the country....and that Cruz has the best record of standing up to that.
Trump was just interviewed on MSNBC. It was quite a good segment.
I (NEVER) watch MSNBC. But maybe I will start.
On this interview Trump specifically said, his comment about getting out of the race was a hypothetical he was answering, about what if his candidacy wasn’t registering with voters.
It already is registering with voters. He’s winning big, in every single poll.
Trump just said. And I will repeat just for emphasis, that is will NEVER get out of this race.
Never.
Trump is in this for the long haul. Scarborough even repeated what Donald said. He said the media spun what he said, and he is in this for the long haul.
I completely believe him.
<><> Ann Coulter described Trump's immigration dissertation as better than the hallowed Magna Carta.
<><> Trump w/ an American eagle. / Martin Schoeller for Time magazine.
<><> He was depicted as a Founding Father on a magazine cover.
<><> And this.....revolutionary Trump.
Pollutico stirring up $hit as usual.
Well duh! What a stupid question. What he going to say “Oh yeah I have no chance to win because Trump is going to be the nominee”
LOL...thanks for the realtime input....Trump’s slapdown of Politico.
He should just shut up or he won’t be Vice President.
Of course, as has been said, a candidate can putter to the early primaries on fumes.
And that is exactly why Trump and Carson are so very far ahead of Cruz. Yes Cruz has given Washington hell but he is a Senator and part of the political class and therefore not trusted. Cruz is correct though that if Trump and Carson bomb, their supporters will go to him.
That observation evidences a complete disconnect from Trump's actual business interests. I'm not going to reveal all that here ...but trust me Donald's business interests are in safe hands....as we type.
So “Mr. Pathways to Citizenship” is making predictions already?
Ballsy....
THE LSM trying to stir up trouble between Cruz and Trump.
Cruz has to make statements like this. If he said: “Aw shucks, it sure looks like Trump is going to beat us all”, I don’t think his supporters would be hanging around his camp much longer. If he plans on winning, he needs to be convincing as well as have some good ideas to promote.
And if he does get the nomination, I would vote for him.
who would have EVER thought that the race could clearly come down to a two man race: Trump and Carson.
Will it stay that way? Not clear...but it’s been that way now for a few weeks. Incredible.
