Powerful Republican Congressman Paul Ryan (R-Janesville) stood firm on Thursday in his desire not to become the next Speaker of the House.
Ryan, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, issued a statement after House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy shocked the GOP when he abruptly ended his candidacy to replace Speaker John Boehner.
"While I am grateful for the encouragement I've received, I will not be a candidate," Ryan said. "I continue to believe I can best serve the country and this (Republican) conference as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee."
CNN reported McCarthy was with his wife and children at the closed-door meeting of Republicans selecting the nominee, when he announced his decision.

Have any video to back that up.
Seriously?
The Freedom caucus is driving this...and I am glad to see it.
They are uniting behind their man, Webster, and without their votes, no other candidate can win the Speaker
It’s time we get someone in as Speaker who is willing to take the fight to this malicious, anti-American administration.
Then let it serve as a sign to the Senate and what is awaiting them if they do not fight themselves. Cruz and a couple of others have been showing the way...but McConnell needs to go too.
said it before....that book cover is the political equivalent of the Sports Illustrated Curse.
Yup, after McCarthy’s decision today the Post Turtle has
got to be “concerned” when he will be getting a knock on the door. :)
Good, his retirement can’t come fast enough. He can take that two faced Cornyn with him.
Well Sir, Paul that is almost the best information heard today. Never wanted you in that position anyway. You have your reasons and WTP have ours as well....many, many, many reasons. You are not one of US only being the first.
Okay, I wanna know who in the HELL asked him to be? Whoever it was obviously need a buggy whip whipping.
The statement by Paul Ryan and others who will follow maybe trial balloons to see who might possibly be acceptable after this cluster whatever. You can bet they have their minions shadowing blog sites for feedback. Unless the whole lot of rinos headed to the White House basement for their dearleader’s input and advice. Never know.
RE: Okay, I wanna know who in the HELL asked him to be?
Fox News reports that it was John Boehner.
The Constitution may not specifically say the Speaker is one of the members, but only because it wouldn’t have occurred to them they needed to say something so obvious.
But fine, let’s say the Speaker can be anyone. That doesn’t mean it can happen, Constitutionally allowed or not. Nobody is going to vote Paris Hilton the Speaker. Same is true for Cruz.

Daniel Webster would be great at this job...
I like Paul Ryan - but his father died of heart problems when he was young - same as his grandfather. Ryan has young children and he doesn’t need the stress of being speaker.
What about Daniel Webster?
Paul Ryan declines to run for Speaker. Conservatives not too enthusiastic about his candidacy. (comments)
