It Took Me Two Hours to Get my Hands on an AK-47. Welcome to America

It’s not hard to get your hands on illegal guns and rifles in America. It took me about two hours. I called a guy from the old neighborhood in LA, said something about a “piece”, and, hours later, I was staring at an AK-47 and an illegally modified AR-15, which were sitting on a kitchen table. Welcome to America.

Admittedly, he was surprised at my interest in being strapped since it’s been a good minute since I was about the life, but when I explained I was simply curious to see how long it’d take for me to get a gat, he agreed to the idea. He had some handguns, too, he said, although I didn’t see ‘em. I took his word for it after seeing the AK-47 and AR-15, because those weapons leave an impression.

Some of the weapons were smuggled in, while others were bought on the up and up – waiting period and all. Moving them is not his thing; he collects, and, on occasion, heads out to the desert with others to shoot. If I needed something, we could talk to another homie and with a few hundred dollars out of pocket, I’d be set. I passed on the opportunity.

I didn’t expect my search to be so successful – especially since the black market usually requires some know-how, something I don’t have much of these days, since, well, I’ve done a complete 180, and I rarely spend anytime even associating with people running afoul of the law. But it was shockingly easy.

Looking at these highly dangerous weapons, I felt deeply disturbed – despite being a veteran and having served in Iraq. There’s something about seeing these weapons here in the US and not in a combat zone; it makes it all too unsettling, as

Here are FOUR police killings in ten years:

Crime Involving Illegally Owned Machine Guns

Again in Targeting Guns, Kleck writes, four police officers were killed in the line of duty by machine guns from 1983 to 1992. (713 law enforcement officers were killed during that period, 651 with guns.)

In 1980, when Miami’s homicide rate was at an all-time high, less than 1% of all homicides involved machine guns. (Miami was supposedly a “machine gun Mecca” and drug trafficking capital of the U.S.) Although there are no national figures to compare to, machine gun deaths were probably lower elsewhere. Kleck cites several examples:
•Of 2,200 guns recovered by Minneapolis police (1987-1989), not one was fully automatic.

•A total of 420 weapons, including 375 guns, were seized during drug warrant executions and arrests by the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad (Will and Grundie counties in the Chicago metropolitan area, 1980-1989). None of the guns was a machine gun.

•16 of 2,359 (0.7%) of the guns seized in the Detroit area (1991-1992) in connection with “the investigation of narcotics trafficking operations” were machine guns.

These weapons were already obtained illegally. Does the writer suggest we make them double secret illegal?

“The first was committed by a policeman in Dayton, Ohio in 1988.”

That is the ONLY one I’ve ever heard of. Didn’t know there was a second. I wonder if there are any stats out there for silenced weapons used in a crime or SBRs? Contrary to the anti-gunners agenda, the folks who go through all the paperwork, background checks, long waiting periods, and high expense to obtain class 3 items, very seldom (if ever) use any of them for crimes. It seems the people who jump through all the hoops to obtain these items legitimately, are not the sort to use them for criminal purposes.

So some guy that was a criminal, and ran with criminals, and fought overseas, we are supposed to believe that “Looking at these highly dangerous weapons, I felt deeply disturbed...there’s something about seeing these weapons here in the US and not in a combat zone; it makes it all too unsettling...”

I think the guy is a Wanker.

I’m sure I could get a gun in Great Britain in a fairly short time, using the same method this putz likely used to get his AK47 here.

Yup. The street works the same way, no matter where you are. If Britain had such a control on their streets, they would not have an illegal alien problem, nor would they have a drug problem... The same forces that can bring in these things are the same forces that can bring in anything.

He makes a great point that restrictive gun laws do absolutely no good.

Okay so he has a friend who collects guns and knows other gun collectors. He didn’t ask to “purchase” guns as far as I can tell...but wanted to see them. So the friend says okay, we can borrow them for a couple hundred bucks. What’s the story? That friends will let you borrow your guns to shoot but you have to pay for your own ammo and compensate for wear?

So let me guess the punchline to the story - they don’t actually want to go after the criminals who smuggle guns but punish the innocent (an est. 120 Million strong) Who have DONE NOTHING WRONG!

Really? An AK 47.

I am sure it was an AK 47, automatic.

And a modified AR15. What the hell is that?

I don’t even want think about what the sentence is for carrying a fully automatic weapon would be.

Did he call the ATF? If not, then he too may be guilty.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but any brand new AK’s, that is manufactured by Kalashnilov in Russia, are illegal. The reason being economic sanctions for Putin's moves in the Ukraine. Now any Russian guns purchased before sanctions, or other clones made in a variety of East European countries are good to go. I believe even an American company makes one now, also good to go.

I’m not sure of the point — is he suggesting that we outlaw illegal guns?

I think he's complaining that it took two hours to get them. I agree, that sucks.
