Russias military offensive in Syria is only a week old, but the casualties for American foreign policy are already mounting.
Gone is any slim hope President Obama might once have had about gradually improving relations with Iran, whose military envoys are helping buttress Syrias President Bashar al-Assad while Russia provides air cover.
Gone is any hope that Russian President Vladimir Putin, pressured by international economic sanctions imposed after the annexation of Ukraines Crimea, would out of self-interest pull back from confrontation with the United States and Europe or, as Obama administration officials liked phrasing it, that Putin would take an exit ramp.
Gone is the hope that diplomacy in recent weeks between the United States, Russia and Saudi Arabia might produce a negotiated settlement in Syria and stop the exodus of Syrians fleeing the violence. While Secretary of State John F. Kerry wants to pursue that avenue, another administration official last week called it a pipe dream. And the prospect seems even more remote now.
For Obama, who has faced a series of foreign policy tests, this test is one of the toughest.

Putin is nothing like Mitch McConnell.
Diplomacy is a very poor substitute for victory.
Commies weeping bitter tears for their master, 0bama.
Suh-weeet! :)
Putin is killing the Muslims who were murdering Christians.
He’s a thug, but if a thug is doing the job the U.S. was too stupid to do, what’s the problem?
We should be allied with Russia against the invading Muslims. Instead, we are backing ISIS and AQ...
Yeah, because libtard diplomacy has worked so well up to now.
What a bit of propaganda that is. As though Obama has been working furiously on "diplomacy."
What these idiots from the Washington Post don’t understand is that Muslims will not engage in diplomacy unless they are losing. And they will not lose without being on the receiving end of bombs. Therefore bombs are the only hope for diplomacy in the Middle East. Diplomacy without bombs is taken as weakness, and Muslims don’t engage in diplomacy while they’re winning (unless they get everything they want, such as the Iran-Obama nuclear “deal”).
you cant use diplomacy with radical Muzzys....
kill them.
ISIS has a strategy
Russia has a strategy
America has nothing except letting transvestites into the military not offending muslims.
You don’t use diplomacy when dealing with sub-human savages.
I am going to stop reading the news right now. End on a high note, as this makes my day.
Fundamentally Stupid: “Hopes for Negotiation”
Who would be on the other side of the table from Assad? Al Nusra? ISIS? What would be their conditions? “A: Your head on a pike!”
Sometimes, the only solution is a military one.
May they both slaughter as many of the other side’s evil S.O.B.s as possible.
Sometimes things are real simple. Most world leaders, unlike Obama, take definitive actions that are in their nation’s best strategic interest. Russia cannot allow nearby Syria to become a jihadist state. It would then be a base and haven for the Islamic terrorists who are causing havoc in southern Russia and even attacked Moscow. Iran cannot allow the Sunni jihadists to win in Iraq. If they do then millions of destitute Arabic speaking Shi’ite refugees would flood into Iran and Iran would have a hostile, barbaric Sunni jihadist state on their border.
US foreign policy is at its lowest ebb ever.
How’s that ol’ RESET button working these days?
Diplomacy? Is that what we’ve been doing the last 4 years in Syria?
ISIS does diplomacy?
When Mr. Putin has achieved his goals in Syria, he will stop military action and maybe, just maybe invite the US to some sort of peace talks but not before.
Why is America (the Moslem Obola and the GOP)
supporting al Qaeda and ISIS, anyway?
Answer: The imported incurable diseases and
narcoterrorists were murdering and raping
too few Americans for them.
