The Center Holds
American Thinker ^ | October 5, 2015 | Fritz Pettyjohn

That's my prediction for 2016 in a nutshell. We have two extremes in our politics today. On the right are furious populists, on the left socialist misfits. Neither represent a majority. As always, the center is the key.

Kasich and Rubio are mainstream conservatives. Kasich's record and Rubio's rhetoric line up quite nicely. Either of them will have natural appeal to the center, where elections are won. The other plausible candidate, Ted Cruz, is essentially a mainstream conservative. If he is extreme it’s because of his style and the measures he advocates, not the outcomes he seeks. The Church Lady and other pundits worry that the Trump purported appeal to nativism will tarnish the Republican brand. Nonsense. The winning candidate will be the brand.

While the Republicans will not nominate an extremist, the Democrats will. Like Wilson before him, Obama has taken his party far to the left, too far. The political pendulum is just starting to swing to the right, but Obama will demand that the Democrat candidate resist, and run for his third term. Hillary, Biden, and Sanders will comply with his wishes, or lose the essential black vote. This is a recipe for disaster. Centrist voters will have a clear choice. A center-right conservative vs. a hard core leftist.

And hardcore the Democrat will be, we are assured of that. All the whack jobs on the left are becoming more shrill and militant, and Hillary and the others feel they have no choice but to embrace them. The D's have endorsed Black Lives Matter, and there's a great chance that could blow up in their face. Soros money is at the ready to spread on the flames, and the next police shooting of an unarmed black, justified or not, could be turned into another urban conflagration....

Sounds peachy til the local Kasich dirt starts rising to the surface.

Shame too, since the divine Karen would make an amazing FL.

The Center is political dead weight.

0bama won the Democrat nomination by being the most far-left candidate.

Cantor and Boner have been run out of town for being in the Center of the electorate.

Parties want identifiably ideological candidates, not milque toast pablum slurpers.

Crush the RINO centrists. Add all the anti-establishment candidates, especially those who are not RINOs, and you have a substantial majority of Republican primary voters. Kasich and Rubio will not win.

Go Cruz!

I think it will be Ted Cruz or Ben Carson.

So Trump picking up 20% of the black vote isn’t getting to the center?

No mention of the leader in the republican polls.

Is this the new GOPe strategy? Basically order the MSM to completely ignore Trump and Cruz like they don't even exist?

Rubio is the second string for when !JEB¡ craters, and Kasich(?) is who exactly? Some dude who's boehner’s stunt double?

I see a shift in GOP/DNC/MSM tactics in the near future.

Yes, sticking their fingers in their ears and saying, “I can’t hear you”...

Any more the “center” is way over there on the Left. The Center is socialism without the gulags and cellars yet.

The people are awake this time. Neither left nor right nor moderate resonate. A populist who is a little right and a little left a little sympathetic and a lot tough and very pro-working class does resonate.

That leaves out K and R and C pubs.

Everyone wants to keep discounting the chances of The Donald being able to carry this off. Listen, The Donald is NOT about to run out of campaign cash, and he still pulls in SRO crowds just about everywhere he goes. The Donald’s appeal does not just stop with a goodly portion of Republican voters, he easily crosses over into the “middle” territory and even draws a few adherents from nominally Democrat voters, much like the “Reagan Democrats” of 1980 and 1984.

Is The Donald the right person? Might be, considering the times, and how desperately we need to pull back onto course as leaders of the free world. Would The Donald be a “good” President”? Again, define “good” in this context.

I fear you are probably correct. After decades of electing “moderates”, I feel America may still be too conditioned to find anything other than centrist to be radical. Moderates are what have gotten us into this mess and only when the pain becomes unbearable will most voters decide to take a risk. Moderation, mediocre, and mediocrity are such comfortable positions. We will continue to slip left a little bit at a time. Until we’ve crossed the Rubicon. Perhaps we have already. Maybe America is already...gone?

The winning candidate will be the brand.

Obviously the writer can't remember back to Ronald Reagan.

The GOPe NEVER bought into Reagan, and before he was out the White House door for the last time, they heaved a big sigh of relief. George Bush would certainly set things straight again.

Kasich and Rubio are mainstream conservatives. Kasich's record and Rubio's rhetoric line up quite nicely.

Kasich and Rubio...

Good grief what a destructive bunch of flawed logic...

Better check the polls. Neither will win the nomination.

“The center” 60 years ago is where most of the right wing is today, and it is still America’s center, even if the left calls it “extreme.”

Aim for the real American center, and you will win. With blips on one issue or another, Trump, Cruz, Carson, and Fiorina represent the real American center, and the choice among them will come down to which blips are we willing to accept from a candidate, and which are deal-breakers.

The left is about to discover how out-of-the-center it is.

I wil wager that the MSM won’t do it because Trump means too much ad revenue for them. No one would have watched the “debates” without Trump’s inclusion. Now CNBC is getting 10X the bucks for ads because of Trump. These bastards think more of their wallets than their politics.

I knew nothing about Kasich’s family until I saw your post and went to Google.

What a gorgeous family. The wife and both daughters are beautiful.

And both McCain and Romney had solid double digit support at this point and were firmly on the leadership board. They were not down in the very bottom of the list. The “myth” being spun this season is that the single digit candidates can “come from behind” to win like Romney or McCain.

Too bad for the GOPe that is a myth.

I wouldn't mind Donald at all for president!

He probably won't be corrupted by bribes.
His core ideas are great.
The American people are sick to death of lying, backstabbing Republican politicians pretending to be Conservatives just before the election, but tell you that they want to give you a “punch in the nose” after they're elected.

However, the question was, who do think will win.

I think the media will fool the average fool into thinking that Trump is a racist for not wanting illegal invaders to steal our jobs and government benefits. Even more influential are the dimwitted celebrities that spew this same lie.

The ignorant masses believe every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of Leftist media Socialists on TV. Otherwise there would be almost no Democrats elected.
If a celebrity says something, the dullards are enraptured by the inane feckless braying of empty headed Hollywood morons because they are famous (”so they must know a lot”).
People listen to what astoundingly clueless Matt Damon or Bill Nye the anti-Science Guy vomit out because they are famous.

I think the media will work hard and in unison with the vilest and most vacuous of celebrities to bring Trump down.
