Latest polls likely to make the GOP establishment sweat
MSNBC ^ | 10/5 | Steve Benen

It’s October. Here are the latest national results from the Pew Research Center.

1. Donald Trump: 25% 2. Ben Carson: 16% 3. Carly Fiorina: 8% 3. Marco Rubio: 8% 5. Ted Cruz: 6% 6. Jeb Bush: 4% 7. Mike Huckabee: 2% 7. Rand Paul: 2%

The remaining candidates are at 1% or below in the Pew findings. (Note, this is the first survey of the cycle from the Pew Research Center, so I didn’t include figures as to whether the candidates’ support was increasing or decreasing.)

In addition to Trump’s role as the frontrunner – a role he hasn’t relinquished since surging to the top in the early summer – pay particular attention to Jeb Bush’s surprisingly poor showing. It may be an outlier, but if the Florida Republican’s national backing has dropped to just 4% – a number, ironically, Bush has placed great significance in – it suggests his standing may be reaching the point of no return.

The bias is STILL appalling. Bush’s “surprisingly low” showing???? Us “little folk” mostly, besides disagreeing with him about almost everything, don’t like him. It’s an insult to Republican voters that the $100 million man is still in the race.

I would love if the debate gets down to the top six instead of ten. And Cruz actually starts to get equal time. Then the real games begin.

Jeb at 4%. Ha! Ha!

Not really sure what you’re asking me. I think the early showings by the outsiders will quickly receded except for Trump. I think Carson is - I don’t know what. Frankly, I’ve NO IDEA how that man is polling so high.

Simple. He's being propped up and promoted by the RINO establishment to try to siphon off some Trump support. The Jeb camp announced they would do this after Labor day.

Good thing delegates select the nominee. I see a way for Trump to wrap this up by late March.

His bravado isn’t really Presidential and I suspect that behind curtains, people will vote for someone else.

His bravado is why people like him. He's not an eloquent speaker, true, but that gives him an air of honesty. His speeches seem off the cuff and crude, but not a rehearsed, articulate lie.

The most appealing thing about Trump's candidacy is that it is self funded. People are very sick of the Super Pacs, Citizens United, etc. The Donald is pushing a "I won't be bought" slogan.

Look.....Millons of conservatives did not go to vote for John McCain in 2008 & Mitt Romney in 2012...for the simple reason they kissed Obama like he was their long lost brother. If the Republican Party is so stupid to nominate people like, Bush, Christie, Paul, Kasich, Rubio, etc. as their POTUS nominee...they will lose the POTUS slot, once again!!! There are only this handful of contenders that can win the POTUS for the Pubbies, Donald Trump, Ben Carson, Ted Cruz!!! Rubio is a lightwieght RINO & Fiorina has too much political bagge!!!

If any Republican Establishment RINO get the Pubbie nomination....this Conservative will not be voting at all in 2016!!! IMHO, our country needs to destroy both major political parties...and if it does not...our nation slowly dies!!

I don’t know how to do it but if you do can you please post this picture on FR? It sums up a lot of our feelings about little Marco.

And the I won’t be bought slogan is the very thing that is pushing the establishment to work so hard to get someone that can be bought. This should bother Carly, but if she takes their money, what do you think?

This poll is in line with the other recent polls. What it shows it that while Trump is still in the lead, he has dropped by about 6-8 points since the second debate. His lead over the next candidate has dropped from double digits to about 6 points on average as well. That doesn’t say anything about who will win, the nomination, of course, it just reflects the current state of the race, which has become tighter. It will probably get even tighter as we get closer to actual voting, especially as the 1 percenters drop out.

Yeah, and I’m wondering how Trump would deal with the establishment when he gets to Washington. If he gets half the stuff done that he promises, I’d be happy.

Yes, behind the curtain, Trump loses many voters when they “pause” before pulling the lever.

UNLESS! Jeb Bush is still being pushed by the RINO establishment into the “annointed” position. THEN - IF Bush is still being promoted as “the candidate” , Trump gets the primary vote with an “anti-Bush vote that will get canceled by somebody else later” mindset.

Once Bush is safely flushed, then the competition begins.

Carson as a “chosen” VP or Health Secretary cabinet position will be more likely than a voted in candidate.

If these numbers are real, then TC has a problem.

Cruz is playing the long game, not looking to be the flavor of the month. He knows that the early poll leader is rarely the eventual nominee, and so he is focused on getting his organization established in all of the key states and picking off the supporters of other candidates as they drop in the polls or drop out. He doesn't attack other GOP candidates so that he does not alienate their supporters. We'll see if that strategy works for him. It did before.

JLAGRAYFOX @26: "If any Republican Establishment RINO get the Pubbie nomination....this Conservative will not be voting at all in 2016!!!"

Right! A lowlife RINO or demonicrat (traitor) nominee for President will not get my vote.
