Washington (CNN)Donald Trump said Saturday that had teachers been armed at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, the deadly shooting there this week would not have been as tragic.
Trump has previously cited mental health issues, not guns, as the biggest cause of shootings in the U.S. But his comments on Saturday are his most extensive and emotionally charged about firearms since he launched his campaign in June, as he spoke about his personal gun ownership and elicited his biggest applause of the afternoon in discussing gun rights.
"By the way, it was a gun-free zone," he said at a campaign event in Franklin, Tennessee. "Let me tell you, if you had a couple teachers with guns in that room, you would have been a hell of a lot better off."

I wondered that myself. Lots of guys wouldn’t have let anyone stop them.
Although I suppose that’s easy for me to say.
The very idea we’re even discussing teachers being armed indicates clearly the “state of the union” and our entire legal/criminal/healthcare etc. systems are beyond broken.
This and many other indicators evidences our country is imploding as most know all to well. The question is how to stop it....and who is willing to act to do just that???
We have laws which nobody’s enforcing because our government and legal system prevents doing so and instead protects the guilty via loop halls and such.
What good are laws without enforcement.....especially when we have a Chicago Style thuggery operating in Washington who has zero concern for laws or our constitution.
IMO we are fast approaching a lawless society....and Obama has months yet to take it the rest of the way down.
Two comments. There are veterans in almost every class in every college. Much prefer them to be armed than liberal pooftah professors. Secondly, adult students should be taught to rush the shooter if backed into a corner and evacuate the premises quickly if not cornered. There is no way this guy could have killed all those people had he been bull rushed.
I think Heinlein’s idea was that it was frozen in fear, but I prefer to see it as that it is polite because it now understands where rudeness can go.
......”Thats why I wonder if these anti-Trump obsessed posters/mockers are truly *conservatives*, or even belong on this forum.....
It’s talk as this Jane that is really at the heart of peoples frustration about Trump.... Any who even attempt to vet Trump are shot down as Trump haters and that simply isn’t the truth.
I stopped reading or even posting to Trump threads because the atmosphere has gone beyond vile. ....it’s worse than embarrassing to see the stuff Trump posters are saying about those who prefer another candidate, or in any way mention anything about Trump unless it’s favorable.
Rather then attempt to convince people why Trump should be a good candidate they are doing just the opposite and pushing away even those who would consider voting for Trump.....I’m one of them.
I can hardly stand hearing about Trump because it’s the same old crap on every thread here.....so I get information regarding him elsewhere where civil conversations can and does occur and people can like and appreciate him without having fire dragons breathing down the neck.
Just having my say here because I’m frankly tired of the nastiness.....I like Trump...Prefer Cruz ....and am undecided if or not I’d vote for Trump if he’s the nominee and with good reasons for being undecided.
More people going around armed is generally a good thing for reducing crime. I don’t have statistics but I have been enrolled in 4 CHL/renewal classes. I have seen a total of two 21 year olds in those classes. My son was one of those. I think that even if CHL were allowed on campus the number of students who would be eligible to carry would be very small. There would likely be more school employees taking advantage of it than there would be students. That does not change what you posted, it is just my empirical observation.
That is one thing I did not understand well... why no attempt to leap on the shooter. Someone might have yet gotten shot but then that could have quickly been the end of it as the shooter could not shoot everywhere. This is a good example of sacrifice for good, which Christian faith is supposed to exemplify to a T.
The problem with the “vetting” argument as it stands is that it isn’t JUST Trump in the picture. Vetting any situation means vetting God’s methods too.
You cant get away from the need to deal with the actual meaning which could have been said in many manners... said meaning being something like,..”
uh ..well sure
Well it SOUNDED unappreciative in context. If irony intended then please by all means clarify.
It’s just that common sense as we might like to call it is a mighty preciously rare commodity among the politically active and powerful set. Context, context, context.
its already been said... and repeated MANY times over
When The Would Be Candidate from New York says it ..it becomes HOLY WRIT...and must be treated as though it emanated from the Ark Of The Covenant?
Further why would a dozen students be firing in different directions instead of at the perpetrator? That is simply an emotionally driven non-argument.
Guns in the hand of novices already do more good than harm. You can read case after case, day after day, of someone relatively ignorant of proper firearms usage, effectively defend themselves or a loved one from assailants. Guns are a simple point and click interface, not something we need to give government any more control over. They certainly are some mystical frightening devices that we need to get hysterical over.
Factor out the sarcasm please and tell us what you are accusing. There is no latent lurking misconception here to disabuse by shaming, only what looks a lot like projection.
“Also, screening students entering a school building would have stopped this killer.”
Agreed on the security guards - having them armed, and more than one may have helped limit the damage. Maybe, depending on where they were at the time.
Screening wouldn’t have helped. The first shots were fired from the outside through a window - and killed the teacher first. I don’t know if he just went in through the door or the broken windows.
While their may be some collateral damage with armed students or teachers in the classroom - it probably still would have been less dead.
The other thinking is that knowing their are (or could be) armed people at the school would help prevent many of these nutcases from going there in the first place.
“Factor out the sarcasm please and tell us what you are accusing.”
what is that supposed to mean?? accusing?
whos doing any accusing?
is something a “meme”.like Captain OBVIOUS that Ambiguous, that VAGUE...that Indecipherable?
“There is no latent lurking misconception here to disabuse by shaming, only what looks a lot like projection.”
uh?.... whatever
We’ll have to agree to disagree, caww. We must be seeing different threads.
I see the same repeat posters show up on Trump threads and do nothing but mock and name call Trump. They have no valid argument, so they bash him with name calling.
On the other hand, I offer support to Sen Cruz when he does something worthy of praise. I see other Trump supporters do the same. I don’t see the vitriol on the Cruz threads, of those who Cruz isn’t their candidate, like I do on the Trump threads...specifically from handful of posters.
I’m not speaking of those who come and hold a civilized dialogue. I know where they’re coming from...and know them to be sincere.
Again, if there are folks who absolutely cannot stand Trump, and claim to support another candidate, then why the obsessive, repeated posts on so many Trump threads?
I’m honestly tired of the nastiness and immaturity, myself.
Trumps policies he supports, imo, speaks for themselves.
I, like Trump, like and respect my Sen Cruz. I’ve supported him both with my time and my $$. I don’t get why some of these Cruz supporters cannot just stay on the Cruz threads, and offer praises for his accomplishments, rather than hang out on Trump threads, just to bash and offer nothing constructive.
Good job of evading. Unfortunately evading is not the name of the necessary game.
wow
That is a load of crap. What robber would intentionally rob a place that has at least ONE customer who is armed? Why would he not simply go tot the next store on the block where there isn’t a person with a gun?
If one guy is open carrying, how many are concealed carrying? Does the shop keeper also have a gun?
Robbers aren’t generally highly intelligent, but they are smart enough to know that they are interested in money, not a gun fight.
4 of the 9 victims ranged in age from 33 to 67.
It only takes one, or just the possibility of one to deter someone up to to good.
