Maybe it was an immigration thing..or they married for some legal reason due to the kid and health care ...whatever the case..doesn’t seem like a “normal” relationship.
What was she doing in the UK? On a trip , had a fling, and got pregnant? Or living there?

I am not so sure reputable, mainstream news sources seem to not care. The moment they found he he is half black & maybe even a foreigner, they decided to stop looking it seems.
The gunman has a British father, Ian Mercer, who is aged in his mid-50s and from the north-west of England.
The father, from Lancashire, is believed to have moved to America to live with the killer’s mother, Laurel Harper, who is the second-oldest of four sisters.
Mr Mercer told reporters outside his home he was “as surprised as anyone” at the tragedy.
He said: “Obviously, it’s been a devastating day. Devastating for me and my family. I’m just as shocked as everybody at what happened today.
“I’ve just been talking to the police and the FBI. That’s all the details I have right now, is what you know already.”
Harper-Mercer’s birth was registered in California but he carried a British passport, it also emerged.
Gary Evans, 62, who was married to Harper-Mercer’s aunt, told the Daily Beast that Mr Mercer had separated with nurse Ms Harper when their son was born.
The father’s side of the family comes from Preston in the UK although most appear to now live in California. His grandfather Leo, who lives in Lancashire, was unavailable for comment at home because he is in America on holiday.

It has now emerged that his grandfather lives in Preston.
Widower Joe Mercer, known to his friends as Leo, lives in Ingol, Preston, but spends part of his time in the USA.
A neighbour, who does not wish to be named, said: “He will be absolutely devastated if his grandson is responsible.
“After his wife died, he fell apart and he changed. He missed her so much.
“That’s why he goes to America so much, to be with his family. He’s so proud of his family and it will destroy him to think something so dreadful has happened.”
It is believed that Joe and his wife June raised their family, including the gunman’s father Ian Mercer, at the family home in Ingol.
June died in 2011 and after that the grief-striken Joe began spending more time with his family in America.
