Putin signs decree drafting 150,000 conscripts...fighter jets launch new wave of air strikes

Vladimir Putin has signed a decree drafting nearly 150,000 conscripts into the Russian military as Moscow's warplanes unleashed a new wave of airstrikes in Syria.

The timing of the move – on the very day Russia entered the Syrian conflict yesterday – will raise suspicions the Russian President is planning a wider offensive to prop up his Syrian counterpart.

It also comes after one of Putin's staunchest allies called on him to send in Muslim ground troops to defeat the Islamic State and other Islamist extremist groups.

I have some doubts about these numbers. For one thing, there’s more than one Russian SAM in Syria

I have to admit, per Trump, the enemy of my enemy is my friend and that includes Zippy as one of the enemies of mine.

Will these new conscripts be sent straight into a war zone without combat training?

No. What's the purpose? It'd be a foolish order except when there's an emergency. And there isn't any.

What about the existing motorized rifle regiments?

Putin has recently said that ground operations isn't an option. He left this role for Syrians.

WOW what are you smoking? Putin has no desire to destroy ISIS, he will blame the U.S. for ISIS as he plots his way to his true goals:

#1 Destroy the rebel uprising for Assad.
#2 Partner with Syria, Iran, Iraq to bring about a Shiite dominated Middle East State
#3 Use this power, influence and money gained from this domination to rebuild the Soviet States.
#4 Destroy the USA and Israel.

They’re interested in headlines & sales, not facts.

Well, if your reader finds such mistake once he won't buy your newspaper again.

Syria is 74% Sunni Muslim.

Assad is an Alewite which is a Shia sect of Islam.

The Alewites and Shias (Assad’s power base) are outnumbered 4 to 1.

Trust that Assad populated the the officer corp (certainly the pilots) with Alewites and Shia. He would NOT want a disgruntal Sunni pilot dropping a bomb on his palace or defecting with a fighter jet.

So, we can assume Assad’s infantry was majority Sunni. They have long since deserted or otherwise have no interest dying for Assad.

You CAN NOT take back and hold territory with air strikes, tanks or artillery strikes unless you have infantry to occupy the territory.

The Russian Draft is to begin the training for the eventual Soviet Reunion that Putin with the help of Obama (tell vlad after my election I have more flexibility) will use this Middle East crisis to create.

Maybe. But most people don’t pay that much attention.

Putin’s Chechen ally (former warlord) is wanting Putin to allow him to put troops on the ground in Syria.

#3 isn’t enough for the #4. Russia is far away from anything like destroying the USA and I see no reason why Russia would want to destroy Israel. It’s influence and leadership what is at stake. If Russia succeeds in Syria - and the success is when peaceful life has been restored there, it’ll gain in terms of influence and leadership, while the USA will loose, because the other countries will think that the USA will have tried and failed.

The Russians are re-establishing their Soviet-era role as the principal supporter of secular, leftist governments in the Middle East associated with the Ba'athist Party. At one point, the Soviets had Egypt and Syria as allies. They were the principal nations involved in the Israeli-Arab wars of 1967 and 1973. In the 1970s, we turned Anwar Sadat from away from the Soviets, but lost Iran due in part to the stupidity of the Carter administration.

The Bushes defeated the Ba'athist dictatorship of Sadaam Hussein, and were triumphant against several rebellious factions in a prolonged war, in a large part due to General Petraeus and the much-maligned surge. However, the foreign policy team of the younger Bush was blinded by a Wilsonian idealism that sought democracy in a nation that never had one. They insisted on maintaining the World War I era boundaries of Iraq, which were drawn by Clemenceau and Lloyd George on a map after a few brandies at Versailles.

As flawed as the preceding administration was, the Obama foreign policy team makes them look like the New York Yankees in that team's heyday. Whatever they touched has turned to disaster. The support for the overthrow of the Libyan regime was a blunder on the worst level, as have been their poorly managed intervention in Syria. The negotiations with Iran were a disaster on the order of the concessions granted to Stalin by Roosevelt and his advisers, including the Communist spy Alger Hiss, at Yalta.

It is hard to blame Putin for taking advantage of American weakness and fecklessness to re-establish Russian influence in the Middle East, including an alliance with Iran that fulfills a Russian desire going back to the 19th Century.

Why would a regular call-up be intended for this?

As has been said many times here... Putin is playing chess while Obama is playing checkers (he can’t think beyond domestic politics and appeasing his coalition: minorities, environmentalists, etc.). The real objective is Ukraine. Syria is just a head fake. Putin is, as the military says, inside Obama’s OODA loop because he depends on intellectual giants (and sycophants) like Susan Rice and John Kerry. Watch what happens... the next crisis will be what happens to the Kurds... they will be the biggest losers in this debacle... and while Obama and his butt-boys and girls are scratching their collective asses over what to do in Syria and for the Kurds, the insurgents in the Ukraine, led by the manpower the conscription will free up, will over run the whole country.

Great Job Barrack... keep up the good work!

Why would a Chenchen leader weigh in with such provocative statements? Why stir the pot?

Unless Putin is intentionally fomenting dissent in the Caucuses as an excuse to occupy -reference is made to Ukraine.

Russia will probably see terror attacks within the motherland in weeks/months.

Putin may fully expect it (want it). It may give him a free hand to do what he will.
