ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) Political newcomer Ben Carson raised more than $20 million in the past three months to fuel his bid for the Republican presidential nomination, his campaign said Wednesday, a haul of campaign cash that shatters records and sets a new bar for his GOP rivals.
As other campaigns scrambled to bring in final donations before the end of the fundraising period at midnight, Carson's senior team celebrated its massive haul at its suburban Washington campaign headquarters.
Two dozen staffers shared a red, white and blue chocolate cake topped with frosted numbers "$31,000,000" the total amount the retired neurosurgeon's campaign has raised since he launched his White House bid in May.
"You know, the pundits all said that we would never be able to mount a national campaign for financial reasons, but here we are approaching 600,000 donations," Carson told The Associated Press while campaigning in New Hampshire. "The people have gotten involved, and that's something I think they probably never anticipated."
The day was a culmination of an extraordinary run for Carson, who tapped the wave of anti-establishment sentiment to raise $12 million in September alone, said campaign manager Barry Bennett.

Actually, he could. Every time Cruz has been challenged by the media, he has been able to turn the attack to his own benefit -- using the situation to provide an articulate and effective defense of conservatism.
In fact, I would suggest this is why the media no longer attacks Cruz and, instead, tries to ignore him. It is because attacking him is a losing proposition for them!
Well, if you want to believe that Cruz has been attacked like Trump and has weathered the same level of storm, go ahead. I’m not sharing that belief.
I’m also not convinced that Cruz standing where he is in the polls is proof he has weathered much of anything.
You have seen the focus on Trump, the withering attacks, and reason this is because they are afraid of Cruz?
Well, okay. Thanks for the mention.
I made no such assertion.
However, one of the major reasons for the "withering" attacks on Trump is that he so often leaves himself vulnerable to them.
You must admit The Donald does have a tendency to pull stuff out of his nether regions from time-to-time.
Most people do, and that’s why normal people across this nation are flocking to him. They appreciate a guy who isn’t afraid to go off teleprompter and tell it like it is.
Cruz is using his method to address people. So is Trump.
I now that Cruz isn’t using a teleprompter either, but his delivery isn’t sticking. Something’s up with that.
