John Boehner’s departure creates uncertainty for President Obama

The resignation of Speaker John A. Boehner is sure to complicate life for President Obama, who was able to work with the Ohio Republican on occasion despite a contentious partisan relationship.

On major issues such as immigration reform, Mr. Obama has said publicly that the speaker is more moderate than the tea-party faction of House Republicans whom the White House blames for blocking most legislation. The president also has complained that Mr. Boehner is unable to deliver enough votes in various negotiations with the White House, and the departure of Mr. Boehner opens up the possibility that the new speaker would be more conservative.

Will Boehner Give Obama Everything in Lame Duck?

At his first post-election press conference, House Speaker John Boehner said: "My job is to listen to the American people. The American people have made it clear, they're not for Obamacare. Ask all those Democrats who lost their elections Tuesday night."

He also said: "So, the House, I'm sure, at some point next year, we'll move to repeal Obamacare because it should be repealed and it should be replaced with common sense reforms that respect the doctor/patient relationship."

Did Boehner mean:

1) He intends for the House to terminate implementation of Obamacare at some point in the next year.

2) He intends for the House to ensure Obamacare is implemented next year.
