Volkswagen Chief Martin Winterkorn Resigns Amid Emissions Scandal

FRANKFURT — Martin Winterkorn resigned as chief executive of Volkswagen Wednesday, taking responsibility for an emissions cheating scandal that has gravely damaged the carmaker’s reputation and may spread to the German economy.

“As C.E.O. I accept responsibility for the irregularities that have been found in diesel engines,” Mr. Winterkorn, who had headed the company since 2007, said in a statement.

But he continued to insist he personally committed no misconduct. “I am not aware of any wrong doing on my part.”

I don’t know exactly the answer to your question, but I will point out that the affected models do not get mpg ratings that are noticeably different than similar vehicles that aren’t ‘cheating’.

Around here, in Ohio, emissions tests are required, so I guess people will be required to follow the recall, or not get new tags.

I would rather fix the emission controls in a VW than get killed in a GM.

That said, this was fraud, so I won't be seeing the inside of a VW dealership any time soon, either.

I suspect that vehicles will pass a state emissions test just like they would pass an official EPA test. Digital Engine kontrol ist Wunderbar!

“I bet all the VW owners can’t wait to have their cars broken to satisfy some government bureaucrat.”

My TDI will never see a dealership again. (Actually, you can get better service than at the dealer, but you can’t pay more for it.)

Hey!

Give each ‘refugee’ one of these VWs.

Would be good if they would drive them back to ... Syria, etc.

to pass inspection in most states the vehicle has to be plugged into the state approved OBDII reader it checks against an epa database the version of the cars ecu software given that all versions of the ecu software that the epa deems as fraud will be invalidated any vehicle that shows up to get inspected that when plugged in returns that version will fail and not be allowed to be registered that year. the epa takes this stuff very seriously texas checks not only your ecu version but also does a tail pipe test, and then checks the insurance database to make sure your insurance is valid before they give you a valid reg sticker. so flashing back to the old version will fail a vehicles obd2 test. i guess one could flash the new get inspected then flash the old back once a year but most people do not have the tech programer a sinple obd2 reader wont do it only dealership level programmers will and the dealer could just as easy encypt the ecu a lot already are encrypted.

Remember the good old days when this was a Free Country?

Emissions testing varies from State to State. I’m not sure how many States even Test Diesel Cars. I think many States don’t require Emissions Testing at all (what a dream).
Wish I lived in one of those.

Take the Drivetrain out and put it in an Older Car that is exempt from Smog Testing. Some States have a rolling Year exception and some States like CA have a fixed Year, which I think is 1976. Human Ingenuity knows no bounds. LOL

Where there’s a will there’s a way, or a Corpse.

I’m pretty sure both ISIS and GM have a higher Body Count than Diesel VW’s. Nothing like prioritizing.

diesels may exempt in rural areas but any city that has epa mandated emissions testing all light duty vehicles are tested regardless of fuel type, currently the standards are tier 2 bin 1-5 that all light duty vehicles must meet. these diesels were certified to tier 2 bin 5 to be 50 state legal given that vw cheated they will lose that cert and until they are flashed to the upgraded ecu program a lot of states probably will deny inspection stickers to them. california holds all vehicles to be at least tier 2 bin 5 which is the dirtiest cali also holds most new gasoline cars to be tier 2 bin 2 or better in areas of epa nonattainment. Texas scans every vehicles ecu at every inspection to check for bogus EPROM flashs that people aftermarket tune to increase proformance while defeating the emission regs. i personally know this first hand they catch my Saab every year and make me flash back to the stock rom when it gets plugged into the code box at the inspection station. my Tech 2 programmer for the trionic7 ecu cost well over 3 grand new so most people wont have the means or the tools to flash back and forth normally you pay a pro shop to illigally flash it for a couple hundred bucks. i guess people can do that once a year but most wont they will accept the new rom flash to keep the car street legal. no individual should have the right to pollute more than legally allowed just to gain a few hp, i run my saab on the track mostly not as a daily driver less than 1000 miles a year the rich mix i run on 105 octane is legal off road but no on highway.

OK, thanks. I’m really not familiar with the details (not that that ever stopped anyone from commenting anyway).

BMW passed the requirements without cheating and VW had 40 times NOx output when their cheating software was disabled. Even if the requirements were relaxed I doubt they’d allow 40 times more NOx.

I bet there are a bunch Indian Software Engineers booking flights back to New Delhi ASAP!

So this really is a unique case and points to true internal issues at VW.

Wow, I was giving them the benefit of the doubt until your posts.

Thank you for speaking up.

People are saying that everybody cheats, but that is not true. Volkswagen engine had a software that monitored steering column. When the steering column didn’t move it decided that the engine is on testing stand and switched on the cheating mode. During the cheating mode the engine was sluggish and weak, but it passed the test. Without cheating Volkswagen was emitting 40 times the allowed NOx poison.

Meanwhile another German carmaker - BMW didn’t cheat and passed the test, but of course was more expensive.

The unions did this. VW opened a big plant in Chattanooga TN. Unions were relentless in trying to get in on it. VW stood strong against them, put it to a vote of the employees, the unions lost. This is payback.

Sorry but I really doubt the line assembly union guys miraculously became software coders and car engineers... the decision to do this to be able to sell these cars with false claims happened at design and engineering time not at the assembly plant.

Sounds like it happened at European headquarters. Stay tuned; BMW and Mercedes might be on the hook, too, although to a lesser extent.

Oh it definitely happened at the HQ. The CEO may not have known but some very high up people had to have signed off on this stuff. This wasn’t some low end peon making a mistake
