People are saying that everybody cheats, but that is not true. Volkswagen engine had a software that monitored steering column. When the steering column didn’t move it decided that the engine is on testing stand and switched on the cheating mode. During the cheating mode the engine was sluggish and weak, but it passed the test. Without cheating Volkswagen was emitting 40 times the allowed NOx poison.

Meanwhile another German carmaker - BMW didn’t cheat and passed the test, but of course was more expensive.

Thanks for your informed commentary, but what I want to know is “emitting 40 times the allowed NOx poison” really a problem. My experience is with lead where lead poisoning in children was dropping precipitously under the old standard and when the bureaucrats saw that they arbitrarily halved the lead standard per liter of blood and viola: number of children with lead “poisoning” sky rocket.

Mazda has a really clean diesel, but it is just over the mark for California, so it has only been sold in all other countries. I want that Mazda engine.

This makes me mad, but VW being fined so much also makes me mad.

0bama will only use give the money to a pet environmental group to use. It just makes me so mad.
