~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Lesley J. McNair, D.C.

Fort Lesley J. McNair is a United States Army post located on the tip of Greenleaf Point, the peninsula that lies at the confluence of the Potomac River and the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C. To the peninsula's west is the Washington Channel, while the Anacostia River is on its south side.

The Fort has been an army post for more than 200 years, third in length of service, after the United States Military Academy at West Point and the Carlisle Barracks.

Fort McNair, a part of the Fort Myer Military Community, is the headquarters of the Army's Military District of Washington and home of the National Defense University, as well as the official residence of the US Army's vice chief of staff.

The mission at National Defense University (NDU) supports the joint warfighter by providing rigorous Joint Professional Military Education to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and select others in order to develop leaders that have the ability to operate and creatively think in an unpredictable and complex world.

The National Defense University represents a significant concentration of the defense community's intellectual resources. Originally established in 1976, the university includes the National War College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Fort McNair, and the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia.

The National Defense University also features a first-rate research capability through the Institute for National Strategic Studies. This institute, established in 1984, conducts independent policy analyses and develops policy and strategy alternatives. It also includes a War Gaming and Simulation Center and the NDU Press.

Been through Hillsboro 100 times but have never been to Lake Whitney.

This is the very edge of where hill country begins

Do you have ceremonies/celebrations to go to?

I confess that I don’t know that much about these holidays or how they’re celebrated. :)

But I do #standwithisrael!!

Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement, which is a day of fasting and repentance for the year’s sins.

There is a nice dinner the night before, fasting and services the next day, and a meal to break the fast the next sunset. It is the holiest day on the Jewish calendar and not a day for music lessons! :-)

A Blessed, and Holy Day to our Jewish FRiends!

The Lincoln Assassins were tried and hung at Ft. McNair in 1865. But it was called “The Washington Arsenal” then, because there was a bullet making facility on the post. Also, the photo showing President Lincoln testing a Gatling Gun was taken on the post.
